Where can you find the option? When you are out with one of your characters, you can simply call another one as a companion. This character will then be controlled by the AI, fight by your side, independently take out enemies, and use abilities.
To call the character, you first need to access the character selection wheel. On PC, you find it by holding down F1. Then, you select the character you want to summon as a companion with your mouse and confirm the summoning with the space key.
With the controller, you do this by holding the directional button up on the D-pad and selecting the corresponding character with the stick.

Good, but not for every purpose
Can I always call the characters as companions? No, summoning characters as companions is only limited. Especially when you are doing one of the main missions in the game, you cannot call your companions for help.
They then have the status “On an important mission”, and the game does not allow you to summon them. At the same time, there are many opportunities to use them. Especially when you find yourself thinking “How much longer” while freeing a fortress from hundreds of enemies, companions are worth their weight in gold.
Here the AI really shines and noticeably speeds up your endeavors. So, if you ever have a large camp full of enemies in front of you, remember to summon your companions.
