Since its release about a year ago, Last Epoch has lost a large portion of its players, despite being hailed by many as a potential competitor to Diablo 4. With Season 2, they aim to bring back the lost players.
When does the new season start? Season 2 “Tombs of the Erased” will launch on April 2, 2025. This and more was announced by developer Eleventh Hour Games with a new trailer.
You can watch the trailer here:
Last Epoch lost over 260,000 players in a year
Is Path of Exile 2 currently not the major competitor to Diablo 4? Yes and no. Path of Exile 2 is still a very complex ARPG, which doesn’t appeal to everyone. According to many players, Last Epoch offers the ideal middle ground between PoE and Diablo – it’s neither too easy nor too complicated.
What is the problem? Things are looking quite bad for Last Epoch right now: Since its release in February 2024, it has lost a large portion of its active player base. The player numbers have dropped from over 264,000 players on Steam (via steamdb.info) to about 1,600.
A major problem for many players is the ongoing content drought since its release: Smaller updates have continually brought new features to Last Epoch, but they have not been enough to keep players engaged in the long term. There is also a lack of endgame content in Last Epoch at present.
New content aims to revive the endgame
What’s included in the new season? With the start of Season 2 in April, players can look forward to a plethora of new content and quality-of-life improvements. Among them are:
- The “Woven” as a new faction
- The titular “Tombs of the Erased” – procedurally generated sub-zones where new enemies and bosses await
- Improvements to crafting
- A respec option for your mastery
- A rework of the “Sentinel”
Further details about the Season 2 update can be found on the official website (lastepoch.com).
How is the season being received by players? The developers describe Season 2 as the “most extensive update Last Epoch has ever received.” Players are also convinced by the scale, as evidenced by comments on the trailer on YouTube:
- for chandrasivaram, the amount of new (and mind you, free) content is worthy of a “DLC expansion.”
- KruxSmash is also convinced by the size of the update and is already looking forward to taking another look at the game.
- The amount of new endgame activities is also being positively highlighted.
It is expected that Season 2 will spark new interest – especially among players who already own Last Epoch. Whether it can keep them engaged long term this time will only be seen in April when the season releases.
Just a few months ago, Last Epoch received a huge update. However, it was neither communicated properly nor did it change anything for the players – what that was all about, you can read in this article: “A reason to play again” – Last Epoch receives huge update on Steam, but it actually changes nothing
