Since the existence of WoW, damage dealers and healers have been desperately looking for a tank. All the components for what we consider the perfect solution proposed by a player are already present in the Blizzard MMORPG.
What is the problem? Anyone wanting to take on the role of a tank in WoW and other MMORPGs often needs tough skin. The group isn’t moving fast enough through the dungeon? The tank pulls too slowly and cautiously! Damage dealers are dying due to aggro? Learn2Play, tank! The tank is taking too much damage? Go farm better equipment and use your cooldowns!
Additionally, they must know all boss mechanics inside out and every shortcut. If things aren’t moving quickly enough or there’s a wipe, the random group often disbands faster than one can spell Orgrimmar. Many WoW players simply do not want to deal with such experiences and the accompanying responsibility. Consequently, groups often have to wait a long time for a tank.

What could the solution be? Over the past decades, Blizzard has tried several times to make the role of tank more rewarding. Almost all classes added after Vanilla WoW (Death Knight, Monk, Demon Hunter) can tank. Only the Caller is limited to healing and damage. Furthermore, extra rewards are available when one signs up for a role that is currently underrepresented in the group search.
These measures have only helped to a limited extent.
According to a player from the community, WoW already possesses all the components needed for the ultimate solution to the tank crisis:
- Gnomes
- Druids
- Pets
The suggestion by Yibby on Reddit: Gnomes could choose the Druid class in the future and take on the forms of their collected pets through their shapeshifts. Instead of being in bear form, Druid tanks would appear as Chrominius, Lil’Ragnaros, Baa’l, or Jiggles in front of their opponents. How cute would THAT be?!
How does the community evaluate the proposal? The more than 2,900 thumbs up and over 130 comments in 13 hours show that Yibby’s proposal is very well received.
- _toadsy explains: “I have been advocating for gnome druids with baby animal forms for years. As a Druid tank player, I wouldn’t be another tank, but I would immediately switch races.”
- LumiyaSpellsong writes: “I’ve also been advocating for gnome druids for ages! In late 2005/early 2006, I created an image […], to see how the 0.5 tier set for druids would look on my gnome warlock, and I liked it (and the druid) so much that I designed a whole series of ridiculous graphics for an expansion idea […].” You can find the image on Reddit.
- Azsunyx furthers the idea: “The Mechagnome druids could be all the mechanical animals… or a little Gundam.”
- Dangerous_Company584 celebrates: “You are a damn genius. Give this man a billion dollars.”
