The fantasy MMORPG Phantasy Star Online 2 is set to be released on the Playstation 4 in 2016. There is no news on a Western release, it is still planned.
Phantasy Star is a long-standing and glorious RPG franchise from SEGA. The first one came out many, many years ago, in 1987 on the SEGA Master System. The first Phantasy Star and its sequels on the Mega Drive, Phantasy Star II (89) and IV (93), are considered highlights not only of their generation but of console RPGs in general.
The current MMO edition of Phantasy Star is called Phantasy Online II. It is currently available on PC and PS Vita. There is a version for Japan and there’s also an English version available in Southeast Asia. Both versions are out of reach for the “normal player”, although there are ways to find the game on the internet.
The English version in Southeast Asia has about an IP block. It was briefly disabled for a week to fix a bug, then it was back up.
In any case: Sega has now announced that Phantasy Star Online 2 will also be brought to the Playstation 4 in 2016. A new expansion will also be released.
SEGA announced some time ago a Western port for Phantasy Star Online 2, but it’s been quiet on that front. There is hope that a Western release may speed up now as the Playstation 4 has been such a huge success outside Japan.
