A player has already completed the new league in Path of Exile and achieved a tough challenge – just a week after its launch. As a reward, there are now $8000.
How did he manage that? During the currently ongoing Metamorph league, the player Darkee killed the “Awakener”. Darkee is a streamer for the e-sports organization Method, which regularly achieves first kills in WoW. The Awakener is currently the hardest boss in the game.
Darkee played a Necromancer and relied on skeletons – he used a similar build to the build others have already used to defeat tough bosses naked. His necro is at level 98 and Darkee himself was quite careful during his kill of the Awakener.
You can find the video of his kills along with some comments on his Twitch stream Lightee7:

That’s why it’s so significant: Darkee killed the boss in “Hardcore Solo Self-found” mode, meaning without any interaction with other players and indeed “Hardcore”. If his character dies, the journey is over.
Darkee played for over 5 days and 15 hours. Since he achieved the kill on December 19, the corresponding update was just about 7 days old. So he played between 18 and 20 hours a day. Other people set world records with such numbers or complete Path of Exile in just two hours.

Darkee defeats boss, wins $8000
That’s the prize: Darkee was the first to conquer the Awakener in this mode. A sort of bounty was placed on the boss: In a challenge, the developers, in collaboration with content creator Zizaran, set a prize.
The first player to defeat the Awakener receives $8000. There are also further rewards for those who come next:
- $4000 for 2nd place
- $2000 for 3rd place
- $500 for 4th-15th place
- 20 bundles with items from the in-game shop, raffled among all who have slain the boss at the highest level
Path of Exile itself seems to be doing quite well at the moment. The new Metamorph league has led to great success for the game on Twitch:
