In Path of Exile 2 the trading of items has long been in full swing. We explain how the trading system works with 0.3.0 and what you need to keep in mind.
How does trading work in Path of Exile 2? When the Early Access of Path of Exile started, there was – just like in its predecessor – no auction house or similar, where you could simply offer your items. Instead, you had to go to a special website of the developers (via pathofexile.com), where most of the trading took place.
On the website, you can still buy almost every item in the game and upgrade your character, even if you are always dropping the wrong items from the boss. You can also sell these items through the website and earn currency.
In order to trade there, you first need a “Path of Exile” account. If you don’t have one yet, create one and connect the platform you purchased your game on at pathofexile.com. It’s best to set the website to the language you are using in the game using the flags at the top right, so you can find the items you are looking for right away.
What’s new with update 0.3.0? The developers have significantly expanded trading in Path of Exile 2 with “The Third Edict”.
- There is now an asynchronous trading system that allows you to buy items from players immediately, even when they are offline.
- With the launch of the update, you can convert your premium stash tabs into so-called Merchant Tabs. When an item is sold through such a Merchant Tab, the buyer must pay a small gold fee for the trade. The seller does not pay a fee for items sold or offered.
- There is also a new endgame market browser. You can open this through the menu item “Market Panel” (shortcut: /). Search for your desired item there. Once you find it, you can teleport to the owner’s hideout by clicking “Secure Item”. You can then buy the item in the local shop. The respective seller does not need to be offline for this. You also have access to almost all the functions of the previous trading website. More on this below.

How to buy items in Path of Exile 2
On the trade page or in the new endgame market of PoE2, you can search or filter directly for items. These filters allow you to filter by values, types of items, or certain properties. For example, you can display all items that give you bonuses on minions.
Make sure to set the league you are playing in next to the search bar. Otherwise, you will automatically search in the standard league, even if your character is not located there.
However, it is also important to filter by requirements, as the ideal item for your build is not useful if you can only wear it after many hours of gameplay because your level is not high enough or your stat values are too low.
Once you have filtered for an item, you will see an overview like this:
If you find an item you want and the stated price on the right side also matches your taste, you need to click on the “Whisper Message” / “Direct Whisper” button. That way, you send a direct message to the seller in-game.
If the player is not AFK, he will usually invite you to the group. Accept this invitation and then visit the seller in his hideout by right-clicking on his icon and pressing the respective button.
If neither of you has a hideout yet, you will first need to agree on a meeting point for the trade. Most choose the town of Act 1.
If you are in the same region, you only need to right-click on the player and hit the trade button. Place the payment in your field and wait for your counterpart’s item before confirming the trade. Hover over the item to ensure all values match. When you’re ready, confirm the trade.
To buy an item through asynchronous trading, you can teleport directly to the seller’s base with the new teleportation button. There, talk to the selling NPC to receive the item. However, if your counterpart’s home is full, you cannot enter.
How to sell an item in Path of Exile 2
To sell an item on the marketplace in Path of Exile 2, you first need a premium trade stash. While you can trade without it, your items won’t be listed on the official site, which significantly reduces the chances of a sale.
Before you start offering your item, you should set up your trading stash properly. To do this, open the stash settings by right-clicking on the name. Set the stash to “Public” and choose the setting “Individual Price per Item”.
Place the item you want to sell in your premium trade stash and right-click on it. Here you can then set a price with or without negotiation. Prices for items in Path of Exile 2 are usually indicated in “Exalted Orbs”.
Once you have set a price for an item, it will appear on the public trading website shortly after. Be sure to check the chat to see if a potential buyer contacts you.
If a buyer contacts you, invite him to the group and meet in the hideout. If you are in the same region, you just need to right-click on the player and hit the trade button. Put the item in your field and wait for your counterpart’s payment before confirming the trade. Hover over the payment to ensure everything is correct. When you’re ready, confirm the trade.
Caution: Scammers
Is there anything else to consider? In Path of Exile 2, there are many scammers and trading bots trying to get your items. The following points may indicate that your counterpart wants to scam you:
- Your counterpart interrupts the trade
- The item looks different even though it has the same name (e.g. Silk Robe)
- You are asked to trade through a middleman
- After listing your item, you receive a flood of messages
- The item is supposed to be exchanged for another item, instead of for currency
Always check the items and the prices you offered for your item carefully. If something seems off or everything is delayed, politely cancel the trade.
Furthermore, trading with gold is not possible. This currency is almost exclusively used for trading with NPCs and is not intended for trading items via the website. Since update 0.3, it is also used for the new asynchronous trading.
When selling, you should definitely first check how expensive comparable items are and then offer your items at that price. If you are too cheap, you will quickly notice through a flood of requests. If no one contacts you for too long, you should offer your item at a lower price. Alternatively, you can also offer items a bit more expensive through the asynchronous trading and just let them sit for a few days before changing the price.
Warning: Some scammers intentionally list expensive items too cheaply, so you undercut the scammers and they can get your items cheaper. Make sure to check more than just the cheapest item.
Especially when you have problems with a boss fight and don’t feel like grinding for hours, an additional item from another player can make all the difference.
