The Game Director
Jonathan Rogers of Path of Exile 2 provided insight into the plans for the RPG in an interview with a popular streamer. MeinMMO reveals the details.
Jonathan Rogers, the Game Director of Path of Exile 2, provided an exclusive insight into the ARPG in an interview with the popular streamer and Path of Exile veteran Kripparrian
. Questions from viewers and fans were answered during the session.
Story campaign is expected to last between 40 and 50 hours
Completing the story campaign for the first time, which is expected to include six major acts in Path of Exile 2, will likely take between 40 and 50 hours, as Jonathan Rogers mentioned in the interview.
About 30 minutes per boss zone, particularly for players who have never played Path of Exile or other ARPG games like Diablo. After players have familiarized themselves with the game, completing the campaign will take a similar amount of time as in Path of Exile.
Notably revealed during the conversation is that it will not be possible to skip
bosses in Path of Exile 2. Players whose characters are too weak or unprepared will therefore have to choose to acquire new gear, reach a higher level, or learn mechanics better to overcome the challenge.
Accessibility for newcomers
The complexity of Path of Exile was also mentioned. The developers are aware that the game is known for its complexity but are actively working to improve accessibility – particularly with the skill gem.
They are trying to enhance accessibility without sacrificing unique and complex elements of the game. The goal is to make it appealing for both veterans and newcomers.

What’s also planned:
- PoE2 plans to introduce almost twice as many ascendance classes (a total of 36) as in PoE, which is expected to lead to a variety of new archetypes and builds.
- Overall, the developers aim for Path of Exile 2 to be
just as big
or evenbigger
than any other action RPG. - Path of Exile 2 is supposed to offer more endgame content. They want to ensure that there are many challenges and rewards to make endgame interesting.
- There will be no XP loss in the campaign, but resetting bosses will be seen as a sufficient penalty, as players are expected to die to bosses.
- However, there will be an XP penalty in the endgame to create a challenge for reaching level 100. Jonathan has not yet revealed how this will be implemented.
- When playing alone, there should be an option to pause the game in PoE2.
Closed Beta in June 2024
What about the beta? Rogers also informed about the upcoming beta version, which is set to start in June. The beta will practically include all planned content for Path of Exile 2, including the six acts and 60 maps.
The beta starts on June 7, 2024.
Only the remaining maps and part of the endgame are excluded. This comprehensive beta version allows Grinding Gear Games (GGG) to effectively test especially the economy
in the game and the game overall, as Jonathan Rogers emphasizes in the interview with Kripparrian.
The beta is also expected to include other endgame systems, but the focus will be on testing the campaign and the maps for progression
and economic balance
.
According to mmorpg.org, the distribution of beta invitations is expected to be similar to that of Path of Exile 3.0. This means there will be a counter on the official website that will grant a random player access to the closed beta every few minutes. Alternative invitation waves and automatic invitations for players who have previously purchased microtransactions (packs) are also conceivable. In other words, players who regularly support the developers by purchasing PoE packs.
These are just speculations; more details are not yet known.
Further information about Path of Exile 2 can be expected relatively early next year (2024), according to Rogers. Jonathan Rogers is also active in the community and answers many questions personally in the PoE2 subreddit.
