In Path of Exile 2, you have limited chest space – and this fills up quite quickly, especially in the endgame. A workbench helps you save space while upgrading items.
Once you reach the endgame of Path of Exile 2, you will collect so-called way stones. The stones are essential for the endgame as they allow you to explore the card system. The higher the level of the way stone, the better rewards you receive. However, the stones cannot be stacked and eventually take up entire chest slots.

With a workbench, you have the option to combine and enhance the stones. Additionally, the special workbench is not only suitable for reworking the way stones – but also for other items.
To see what effects your items have, you first need to identify them. An NPC takes care of this for you in Path of Exile 2:
Combine 3 items, get 1 new
What kind of workbench is this? In Path of Exile 2, you unlock the “Reworking Workbench” during the story in Act 3. There you have the option to reforge three items into a new item. However, you won’t see what comes out of your forging attempts beforehand.
There you can easily reforge the way stones you no longer need. This not only saves space in your chest but also provides you with way stones of a higher level.
How to reforge way stones: To reforge way stones, you need 3 stones of the same level. In a video by the streamer and content creator DatModz, you can see on X that you can also combine normal stones with magical stones for this.
If you have accumulated many way stones of different levels but actually need higher ones, you can upgrade them to get exactly what you need. Also, way stones obtained from the reworking workbench can be reforged again. If you are missing lower-level way stones, you can get them from the NPC Doryani for gold.
What else can I reforge? Besides way stones, you also have the option to reforge other items – such as runes, rings, or other equipment. However, it is essential that it is an item of the same type. Just pay attention to the name of the item.
What you should note:
- If you have collected 3 ruby rings, you can forge them into a new ruby ring.
- 3 runes, however, will become a rune of a different type.
- The reworking process cannot be reversed.
- The 3 items will also be destroyed in the process – but you will receive a new one.
If you don’t have enough items to reforge and still want to quickly obtain your desired items, you can rely on an alternative: the trading system in Path of Exile 2.
