In Diablo 4, many builds currently rely on a combination of various factors that significantly increases damage numbers. Especially in focus: the Overwhelm mechanic, which overshadows other builds in Season 8. Blizzard will soon weaken the mechanic.
What factors are involved? Although the Overwhelm mechanic was originally intended only for certain classes, it has now become an integral part of many top builds in Season 8. This is primarily because Overwhelm adds additional damage based on your maximum health.
This is currently leading to some overpowered builds. In Season 9, Blizzard aims to counter this and is adjusting the components. After all, it was not intended for so many builds to benefit from this mechanic.
Developers say: That was not the intention
This is what Blizzard says: In last “Campfire Chat” livestream on May 22, 2025, game designer Charles Dunn explains that Overwhelm has been “too overwhelming” for quite some time. In the last few seasons, it has been one of the strongest mechanics overall, across classes.
The idea was actually different, Charles Dunn explains in the livestream:
The original idea behind Overwhelm was that it should be a stat for more tanky builds – so builds with this “defensive power fantasy”, like Werebear Druids, Barbarians, or Blood Necros. They should also be able to achieve something offensively with values like maximum health and fortification.
The combination ended up being much stronger than expected, even stronger than mechanics like critical hits. Systems designer Aislyn Hall adds that Overwhelm now even dominates builds that should have nothing to do with it. “Every class has tried to build something with Overwhelm because it was just so powerful,” Dunn notes.
How does Blizzard plan to nerf the mechanic? In Season 9, Blizzard is changing the additive damage component of Overwhelm, i.e., the part of the formula that causes the absurd damage peaks. Essentially, the additive component will be reduced by 80%. “If you previously received a 1000% bonus damage, it will only be 200% on the PTR,” explains Dunn.
The game designer explains that there will still be a multiplicative damage bonus, but you must actively work towards it. It will still be worth using the mechanic; it remains strong – and better than not using it at all. Players shouldn’t feel forced to rely on Overwhelm just to keep up.
Currently, builds with Overwhelm dominate the top of the tier list in Season 9.
Many fans find: A nerf was long overdue
How is this being received? The Diablo 4 community is currently discussing in a thread on Reddit about the nerf of the mechanic. Some players feel: The nerf comes at the right time. Others say that 80% less is not enough. And there are also voices emphasizing that even with the OP mechanic, no one has cracked the highest dungeon levels yet.
Here are some reactions from the thread:
- “Honestly: The Overwhelm nerf is fine. The meta was completely dominated by it,” says asria.
- The_Fallen_Messiah says: “That was long overdue. Stacking life to boost damage and survivability at the same time should never work so well.”
- And Business717 says: “Even 80% is still not enough […]. The top builds will still be those that effectively use Overwhelm because in this game you have to take every single damage multiplier you can get.”
- “Could we also push the weaker builds at the same time?” asks Thorkle13. He believes that even after the nerf, Overwhelm builds will likely still be at the top of the damage output.
In a comment, user Nortdort notes: “Even with all the Overwhelm stuff, no one has still reached dungeon level 150 with the new changes in Season 8.” Blizzard has significantly increased the difficulty at the torment levels in Diablo 4 with Season 8.
Now, Nortdort wonders how to even get past level 110 after the nerf. His idea: Better to bring other mechanics up to Overwhelm’s level – or to slightly reduce dungeon scaling again.
