Apparently there was once a plan for the Xbox One to launch with a huge action RPG that fully relied on the cloud. However, nothing came of “Stormlands”.
Developer Obsidian is a successful gaming studio that works for various publishers. Obsidian is independent – a rarity these days. It has its roots in the legendary RPG studio “Black Isle”, which was responsible for Fallout 2, Planescape Torment, and Baldur’s Gate.
The studio itself is known for RPGs like Fallout: New Vegas, Pillars of Eternity, or Tyranny. For my.com, Obsidian developed the tank MMO “Armored Warfare”.
Currently, Obsidian Entertainment is connected with the strategy experts from Paradox, apparently planning something big now that Armored Warfare is no longer in development.
To promote this properly, they have brought in the gaming site Eurogamer for a series about the studio, revealing some interesting details.
Stormlands – the game with the million-man raid
In around 2011, Obsidian was commissioned by Microsoft to develop a launch title for the Xbox One. Stormlands was a game with high ambitions, fully utilizing cloud technology. At that time, Microsoft still envisioned an Xbox that could be placed under televisions worldwide and access the endless resources of the cloud at any time.
The concept set by Microsoft was: You play an action RPG like The Witcher, but then you see a huge creature on the horizon. As you run towards this thing, all other players currently playing the game see it as well and also run towards this giant creature.
Stormlands would have packed the players into 40-man raids and made them fight this enormous creature. Recordings would have been made of this, tailored to each player to view after the battle.
This feature was referred to by Microsoft as a “1 Million Man Raid.” Even though Obsidian did not take the exact directive literally, they understood the idea as a goal of the dimensions they should be thinking for Stormlands.
According to Obsidian, the whole game was incredibly ambitious. Microsoft wanted it to be even bigger and more innovative.
Obsidian also had the team assembled and foresaw a number of difficulties they would have to deal with:
They would have needed their own engine
They would have to deal with multiplayer aspects as a studio focused on single-player
And the fixed release date for the launch of the Xbox One would have been problematic as well
March 2012 marked the end for Stormlands
As Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart says, in March 2012 the phone call from Microsoft came: “The project is canceled.” Following this, Obsidian had to lay off some employees and restructure.
Today, Urquhart believes Stormlands failed because Microsoft “wanted to dream big,” while Obsidian faced the challenge of “how do we make this happen?” This created a rift.
After that, they presented the ideas for the game to other publishers like Ubisoft or 2k – but they did not take the bait. Ultimately, some of the ideas were used in the RPG “Tyranny”.
Mein-MMO thinks: An interesting “what if?” question. After the success of Destiny in 2014, it is clear that there was significant potential for an action MMO on the Xbox One. Such a title exclusive to the Xbox One a year before Destiny could have been a game-changer. But only if it was truly exceptional.
Stormlands could have shaken up the somewhat stagnant MMO world for years. But would have, could have – it went differently.

Bungie promised at the launch of Destiny 2 that veterans of the predecessor would have their rewards. Various emblems that are supposed to reflect the triumphs of Destiny 1 are known. But there is even more!
Bungie has promised the Guardians that their deeds from Destiny 1 will not be forgotten and will be recognized in the successor. Among other things, seven emblems are meant to show the world what dangers you faced in Destiny 1 and which ones you mastered.

After their absence, the raid eggs are now back in Pokémon GO. However, not all trainers are satisfied. For many players, this is a step in the wrong direction.
With an update in Pokémon GO, the eggs and countdown timers for raid battles are back in the game. These eggs were first activated in the game last summer and indicated to trainers that a raid battle would take place soon. Which opponent was in the eggs cannot be recognized from the eggs.
This egg feature was later quietly removed. Now players saw directly which raid bosses were waiting for them in the arenas, without a countdown. For many trainers, this was an advantage that has now been removed.

Advantages of the countdown eggs:
Many trainers organize themselves in WhatsApp, Facebook, or Discord groups with other trainers for raids. Now that the raids no longer start spontaneously, but have a countdown again, there is more time for trainer groups to prepare.
On Reddit, trainers report that they missed some raids because they always arrived too late. With this early notification, their chances of participating in the raid with other trainers increase. Which boss is waiting there is then a surprise.
Disadvantages of the raid eggs:
Some trainers are unimpressed by the countdown eggs. The biggest problem is that they can no longer immediately recognize which raid bosses are waiting for them – they want no surprises.
Trainers choose specific raids because they are looking for a specific raid boss Pokémon. Now chance has to decide whether the yellow egg contains the expected Tyranitar or Rhydon, or if only a Charizard appears.
Reddit user derecho09 adds, “If raids were rarer, there might be a need to prepare longer for an unknown boss. On the other hand, trainers select spots with many raids to decide against which boss they want to fight. For players in rural areas, the eggs might be helpful.”
Mixed feelings among trainers
Since the raids began at the end of June 2017, they have become a regular task for trainers. They are announced with eggs and a countdown timer. This feature suddenly disappeared after a few weeks, and the raid bosses were shown directly.
Without a countdown timer, the raid bosses were directly displayed over the arenas and could be fought for two hours. Now, the time window for battling the raid bosses is only one hour, and trainers must wait for the countdown on an uncertain boss to start the battle.
In the community on Reddit and Facebook, it is often read that the eggs are not a bad idea in themselves. Organizing raids is important in places with few trainers. However, if players could see what is in the eggs beforehand, that would be even better.
Coloring eggs – almost like Easter
Suggestions on how to make the eggs fit into the game “more meaningfully” are frequent. For example, user kaspergm suggests coloring the eggs in the color of the corresponding candies. This way, trainers would know during the countdown where a Tyranitar is waiting for them and still have time to organize.

Another solution would be to shorten the duration of the eggs. Currently, trainers have a one-hour countdown and then one hour to battle the hatched boss. If the duration of the eggs were shortened to half an hour and the battle time for the raid bosses increased back to two hours, Niantic could satisfy some trainers.

The West Side Pier will be the first new PvE area in The Division, introduced with Update 1.8. Massive presents it.
Just a few days after the launch of The Division in March 2016, some players glitched to places outside the actual game world. They got into Central Park and an area where a huge ship stood – many users immediately recognized that this ship was the former aircraft carrier USS Intrepid, which is now used as a museum ship.
Speculation arose about when these locations would come to the game – maybe with Update 1.2 or 1.3?
Now, a good one and a half years later, the museum ship is still not unlocked. In fact, there has not been a single map expansion of the PvE open world so far. Only the Dark Zone was expanded with Update 1.6.

The West Side Pier expands the map to the northwest. It will be divided into two zones (North and South). It is a vast area where you will not have to fight on narrow streets between skyscrapers, but on wide open spaces.

In this area, there is a new Social Space called Camp Clinton. There you can prepare for future adventures. Here you will find new missions, vendors, and crafting and improvement stations.
New narrative content: The enemy factions unite in Update 1.8. In the West Side Pier, you will find dozens of audio logs that tell the backstory.
Dynamic spawn behavior: Enemies spawn in this area differently than in the previous areas. They do not stand around aimlessly on the street, but appear randomly and unexpectedly. A dynamic AI generator has been developed for this purpose. This way, no visit to the West Side Pier will be the same as the last.

Now it’s official: The 1st DLC of Destiny 2 is called Curse of Osiris. Some features are already known.
In the first DLC of Destiny 2, it’s about Osiris. This was already known when Destiny 2 was unveiled in spring, as the Osiris logo was undoubtedly visible on the season pass graphic back then:
At the end of August, a big leak about this DLC came to light: US reporter Jason Schreier stated that the DLC would be called “Course of Osiris” and released in December 2017. There would be a new story revolving around Osiris.
Recently, there was another leak: The Xbox Store listed a complete product description of the DLC. The main features were revealed this way.

In SMITE, Hachiman is a hunter. Let’s take a brief look at his abilities:
The passive ability Master of Arms ensures that Hachiman receives a stackable buff when landing basic attacks, which increases his mana regeneration.
Eagle Eye grants the god some fire arrows. These arrows deal more damage and have greatly increased range, but damage slowly decreases after the normal range (55 units).
The Heavenly Banner can be summoned in a target area. A banner rushes down from the sky and deals area damage. Hachiman himself receives a bonus to his attack speed, and all allies within the banner also benefit from the bonus.
Iaijutsu serves as Hachiman’s escape or stun at the same time. The god dashes in a straight line, passing through all enemies and damaging foes in his path. At the end of the movement, Hachiman performs a circular attack. If an enemy is hit by both effects, they are briefly stunned.

And these treasures are worth it: They can contain all sorts of tasty items, from mods and emblems to blue and legendary items, and even exotic engrams! Sometimes there are also journal entries in there that you can turn in to Cayde-6.
After buying the treasure maps, the locations will be displayed on the map with a pike symbol: you cannot mark the locations – meaning you will only see the approximate find location. You will have to search for them yourself on-site. In the launch week of Destiny 2, three treasures are located in the east of the European Dead Zone, one treasure is in the gorge, and one treasure is in the north above the sludge area.

When you are roaming through the open worlds, some days you will see the challenge indicating that you should collect supply depots. There are different supply depots on various worlds – from the Cabal, the Vex, the Fallen, and the Hive. These depots are boxes scattered throughout the world. But how to find them efficiently?
In these supply depots, Cayde-6 again proves useful. He sells you scout reports for 1250 Glimmer. Choose a scout report for the respective world where you need to search for supply depots and use the report in your inventory. Now, nearby loot depots will be displayed to you for four hours – for you and your fireteam.
Now it’s best to take the Sparrow and zoom through the worlds. When you pass a depot, it will be shown to you with this chest symbol:

Niantic increased the area of test zones for Exclusive Raids in Pokémon GO. After Japan, they also take place in America. When they will come to Germany is still unclear.
The “Exclusive Raids” in Pokémon GO will soon give trainers around the world the chance to battle the legendary Pokémon Mewtwo. These battles are exclusive because only trainers with an invitation can participate.
Currently, these special raids are being tested. The developers have recently added twelve new locations for the raids.
EX Raids last one hour, invitation comes 24 hours in advance
The Pokémon GO developers at Niantic have significantly increased the number of EX Raids. Many new locations have been added in recent days, and the test zone is expanding. Good news for trainers around the world who have not yet had the chance to participate in these raids.
The time window for EX Raids has been reduced from two hours to one hour. Additionally, invitations will be distributed 24 hours before the raids begin. These two times are values that Niantic may still experiment with during the tests to improve the player experience.

Throughout numerous expansions, dungeons, and raids, there have always been particularly rare or particularly beautiful mounts. Many of them have remained in players’ memories, and a few particularly rare mounts still haunt collectors to this day.
But the “king” of all these mounts is Al’ar’s Ashes, with which one can summon the Phoenix mount. It was introduced during The Burning Crusade and can still be obtained in the Tempest Keep from Kael’thas Sunstrider. Although the boss fight is now a piece of cake and the Sun Prince falls at just a glance, the mount remains particularly rare. The loot cave from Destiny 1 is a legend. Images of Guardians shooting at a specific spot for hours circulated shortly after the launch of Destiny 1. Now a new farming spot has emerged in Destiny 2. It is also considered a loot cave, and Guardians farm loot and glimmer for hours. But is it really the same?
The loot cave in Destiny 1 was famous. Since Destiny initially offered so few ways to level up, Guardians sought creative ways to accumulate a lot of loot in a short time. They wanted to “farm loot.”
Treasure seekers found it in the Cosmodrome of Old Russia. There, a handful of Hive enemies would spawn within 6 seconds, which had to be taken out quickly to ensure a steady supply.

There is a type of loot cave in Destiny 2, but it doesn’t work like the farming spot in Destiny 1.
The cave in Destiny 2 revolves around farming chests, which include legendary engrams and tokens needed for building reputation with the planetary factions. Finding the chests in the open is possible, but more time-consuming.
A “Engram rain” in Destiny
The trick works as follows: Fly to the planet Nessus. Directly from the main spawn point, you can head straight to a cave (yes, really), where one of the coveted chests can appear in many spots.
To generate new chests, you need to quickly change areas. Enter the portal and walk a short distance until a new area is displayed at the bottom left. Now you can turn around and search the area for chests.

Not only can you gather loot in the loot cave. It is also an excellent spot for glimmer. Especially for players who have spent all their savings with Banshee and his mods, the loot cave offers a good opportunity to farm and obtain glimmer.

The most important addons for any PvE player, whether for dungeons or raids, are Bossmods. There are two alternatives in this category, BigWigs and DeadlyBossMods (short DBM). They differ primarily in the overlay and a bit in operation. Most raids, however, accept both and do not require uniform usage.
Bossmods are versatile tools. They indicate through bars which abilities bosses will use in dungeons and raids at what time, give warnings when certain abilities require reactions and alert tanks, when a boss is to be spotted.

For the majority of the raid, there is also a distance indicator, which measures the distance to other players and indicates when you are too close or not close enough for certain mechanics. A heads-up display helps additionally.
In addition to these tools for combat, there are also bars and timers for raid cooldowns (such as a countdown for the next stack of rebirth or for heroism/battle frenzy) and audiowarnings (“Run, little girl, run!”). The position of all bars can be adjusted individually.

WeakAuras – stronger than the name suggests
Another important addon for both PvE and PvP players is WeakAuras. While the addon is somewhat confusing and rather difficult to use, it compensates for this by being extremely helpful and useful.
With WeakAuras, you can individually adjust interface displays to show you anything.
One of the most important things that can be adjusted with the mod are personal cooldowns and buffs. There is almost no cooldown, no trinket, no ability that cannot be displayed.

It is tedious to familiarize yourself with the functionality of WeakAuras, and many of the common combinations of all cooldowns of a class already exist as pre-made templates from other players available for download, but for personalization, it is worth getting familiar with the usage.

Less important but rather interesting as a data collection for personal improvement are Damagemeters. These addons collect the damage numbers of all players in the group or raid and break them down in detail. The most commonly used mods in this category are Recount, Details! and Skada, with Details providing the most additional information.
In addition to the damage caused by used abilities (and their share of total damage), the strongest and weakest hits, information such as healing done and received, deaths, damage taken, interrupts, dispels, damage received from opponents, and more can also be retrieved.
This data is also important for raid leaders or officers to know, as it allows errors to be analyzed and eliminated, as well as effectively working on improving individual players.

More numbers on the gear – Pawn and Simulationcraft
If you care a lot about your gear, the addon Pawnwill serve you well. However, this does not mean looking good but rather optimizing your equipment as much as possible for the highest damage numbers.
Pawn incorporates the stats of individual pieces of gear that have been looted or are already in the inventory and calculates a percentage improvement for the selected specialization.
By default, data from “Ask Mr. Robot” is used, which uniformly assigns the best attributes with numerical values that apply to the respective specialization. However, those who engage more with their character will often simulate their values with Simulationcraft.
Simulationcraft generates from the currently equipped gear a string that can be inserted into the corresponding program of the same name. The program then calculates from the given equipment the values that have mathematically the greatest impact on damage. These numbers can then be entered into Pawn either via command or manually, to show individual improvements.
Help for healers – VuhDo
In most instances, healers have a particularly tough job – with their ability, the group lives or dies. With the addon VuhDo, you can at least ease the work a bit. By changing the group display (“Raid Frames”), it can be moved to any place in the interface, customized in size, shape, and color, making it more accessible.
For healers, it is particularly important that healing can be done as quickly and effectively as possible, without wasting time clicking unnecessarily or searching for healable targets. Also, indicators and warnings for dispels or players with critical hit points help with healing.
In addition to the raid frames, it is advisable to bind your spells to a so-called “mouseover” macro. This allows the current spell to be cast on the target currently under the mouse cursor. This can be achieved through the addon “Clique”, or by manually writing the macro. A helpful template is:

It is important to note the empty square brackets, as without them the target would not be selected correctly.
Exorsus Raid Tools – The all-rounder for the raid
If you want to spend most of your time in Antorus when it arrives, and also want to tackle the mythic mode, you will hardly get around Exorsus Raid Tools. The addon was originally written by and for the professional guild Exorsus and contains everything needed for raiding.
The main functions of the tool are the overviews of the raid. In combat, key cooldowns of all participants are timed, tracks who pulled when and with what, provides access to an expanded combat log and allows writing notes that everyone in the group can retrieve and arrange in the interface.
Furthermore, the addon provides insights into the current gear, talents, glyphs etc. of all participants and thus simplifies loot distribution. The presence, invitations, marks, and WeakAuras can also be monitored.
Always right in the face! – Gladius
For all those who want to focus more on PvP and less on PvE, Gladiusis an important addon. It is quite simple, but brings many advantages in its simplicity. However, it is really only necessary for Arena players.
The tool checks the classes and specializations of opponents after opening the arena, as well as their hit points, making it easier to keep track of the short but intense skirmishes in PvP.
The rat tail
There are more addons that rather fall into the category of “quality of life”, making the game a bit more pleasant without being really essential. A brief overview:

For weeks, gaming websites have been reporting on the PC shooter PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and the number of “Concurrent Players” on Steam: these are the “simultaneously playing people.”
On Saturday night, Bungie tweeted casually: “We thank you all for playing. Right now, there are 1.2 million players online in Destiny 2. See you out there.” The message came at 8:24 PM our time – it’s noon in the USA – so it could well increase over the next few hours.

Bungie is likely targeting PUBG and the well-known number from there with the tweet. However, the player counts of both shooters can’t really be compared:
Destiny 2 is live for PS4 and Xbox One, while Destiny 2 for PC won’t be available until the end of October.
A key difference is: Destiny 2 currently has the release hype, and it could well be that there will be fewer players in the coming weeks. This is common with PvE-heavy titles. In online games with experience points and a maximum level, it is the norm that players play more in the leveling phase. This decreases once they reach the maximum level and fall back into a normal rhythm.
In contrast, PUBG shows a steep upward curve of players. This is independent of release and experience points. PUBG is a pure PvP game.
Nevertheless: Destiny 2 certainly has the potential to become the biggest game of 2017 in the “conventional market.” The predecessor, Destiny 1, also impressed with insane numbers. Back then, it was mainly about how many hours each Destiny 1 player spends with the shooter each week.
In October 2014, it was said about Destiny 1: On average, 3.2 million players spend about 3 hours a day with Destiny.
In Destiny 2, Bungie seems to be proud of the sheer amount of simultaneously active Guardians. With such a power, Ghaul and his buddies better watch out.

Those who are quick can complete the main campaign of Destiny 2 in about 10 hours. But that is far from the end – on the contrary: The amount of possibilities can be overwhelming, especially for newcomers. We will bring order to the chaos and show you what you can do after the campaign to get the maximum fun out of Destiny 2.
Activities that can always be completed in the endgame
There is plenty to do in Destiny 2. In addition to public events, you can play Strikes, try yourself in the Crucible, and much more.
However, not all activities can be repeated endlessly to farm unlimited loot. There are also activities that drop loot only once a week.
But let’s first look at which activities are “unlimited”.
Explore the planets – Regional chests and Lost Sectors
Let yourself be dropped off at any fast travel point and explore the beautiful landscapes of the open worlds of Destiny 2. Additionally, you can go on a treasure hunt: At every location, you will find regional chests, whose locations are marked on the overview map. However, you will have to discover their exact locations yourself.

In these regional chests, you will find three tokens of the respective planet that you need to level up the factions.
Also, the Lost Sectors(Lost Sectors) are meant to awaken the explorers’ curiosity of the Guardians. These are completed dungeons with a boss at the end, who leaves behind a depot code promising great loot once defeated!

All Lost Sectors I’ve come across so far led into a slightly hidden cave. So keep an eye out for narrow passageways! In the depots of the Lost Sectors, you can find tokens and high-quality gear! So it’s best to tackle these activities right after the campaign.
The public events are back! And they are also really easy to find. Because the overview map shows you where and when an event will start. Very convenient.
You can now simply fast travel to specific points and participate in the events. However, you should be careful not to tackle these events solo, as it could get quite challenging otherwise.

The public events are also among the best ways to get closer to the maximum level of 300, as you can receive exotic engrams here!
Level the planetary factions!
Scattered across the planets are chests with tokens that you can use to level up the respective faction. For 20 tokens, you level up once with the faction and can look forward to legendary loot that can significantly increase your power level. To find these chests with tokens more easily, you can purchase appropriate consumables from Cayde-6 in the social space (one for each planet).

The tokens are the best choice for legendary gear. Collect them diligently while exploring the planets, and you should level up quickly.
The Strike playlist
If you prefer to let off steam in smaller instances, you can do so in the Strike playlist. Various Strikes are offered here via random rotation. At the end of each Strike, a tough final boss awaits, who drops loot after being defeated. This gear increases your power level up to 270.

If you have had enough of the PvE mode after the campaign, you can knife it out with other Guardians in the Crucible. There is a quick play mode as well as a competitive mode available. After each match, there is loot, whether you win or lose. The upper limit in power level is 270.

The weekly activities
In addition to the mentioned activities, there are still many things to do that you can tackle once a week. Because these drop loot only weekly. These limited activities are among the hardest, but also the most lucrative that you can undertake in Destiny 2. These will get you to the maximum level of 300. They include:

The Nightfall Strike – a harder version of the normal strikes

The Phoenix is a mystical creature that you can find and tame in ARK Survival Evolved (PC, PS4, Xbox One). However, taming the firebird is quite challenging. It is rare and only appears on the “Scorched Earth” map. Additionally, you can only find and tame the bird within a tiny time window. The taming strategy works differently than for most creatures in ARK: You need flames!
The Phoenix is also known as the firebird and only lives in Scorched Earth.
The bird undergoes a recurring cycle: The Phoenix is born from ash in the heat. Once the heat is gone, the creature turns back to dust.Only in the merciless desert of “Scorched Earth” is there enough heat to bring the Phoenix to life.
The Phoenix has a friendly disposition and would never attack. If survivors dare to play with fire, they can tame and ride the mystical creature. This is, however, not easy.

The biggest problem you will encounter when taming the firebird is the time limit.
Here’s what you need to know about taming the Phoenix:

Fire is needed for taming the Phoenix. The firebird must be doused in flames
You can tame the Phoenix with fire arrows, a flamethrower, or a fire wyvern. However, fire arrows are not recommended, as they significantly slow down the taming process
If the Phoenix turns to ash, the taming progress is retained
You only have 5 minutes with the bird during the heatwave in Scorched Earth. Once the “Super Heat” is over, the Phoenix turns to ash. If you have already started taming the Phoenix with fire, your tame progress will be preserved!
This means that if the ash pile turns back into the Phoenix, you can continue taming where you left off. So be sure to remember where the Phoenix’s ash pile is when it turns to dust. Then you won’t have to start searching for the creature all over again.
Taming the Phoenix with a fire wyvern – Watch out for stamina & attack damage
The wyvern has the advantage of being a fast and strong flying creature in ARK Survival Evolved. With it, you can circle over the desert and look for the Phoenix.
If you have a fire wyvern, you can use its flame attack to tame the Phoenix. You need to fly close to the Phoenix and cook it well with the wyvern’s attack. Since the Phoenix is not aggressive and does not fly away from you, you can get close to it.
Use a wyvern with high stamina: The Phoenix stays in the air and will never land. Remember that it only stays for 5 minutes during the heatwave. If your house dragon has too little stamina, you will have to land repeatedly, costing you valuable time.
Use a wyvern with high attack damage: For taming the Phoenix, you need significant firepower. The higher the attack damage of the wyvern, the faster the taming will go.

Another effective method is to build a cage around the Phoenix’s ash. The advantage is that you can tame it comfortably from the ground.

Make sure the cage is high enough! The Phoenix spawns well above the ash pile. It is advisable to stack at least 5 walls on top of each other.

Now you can burn the Phoenix with the flamethrower.However, you will need more than one flamethrower.
If you fail to tame the Phoenix within the 5 minutes of Super Heat, you will need to build the cage even higher. Because it will now spawn above the cage.
Once you have tamed this gem, you primarily have a prestige mount. In combat, it will be less useful, even though it can attack. There are stronger alternatives, such as the wyvern.
The Phoenix feeds on sulfate.
You can also use it as a super fast metal smelter. To do this, simply place the metal in the bird’s inventory. If you put raw meat in the Phoenix’s inventory, it will be cooked. As a resource, you will obtain silica pearls from the firebird – these it excretes.
They are fast, but that doesn’t mean they always win. Killing speedhackers in PUBG is surprisingly satisfying even to watch.

It is strange that the popular top titles on Twitch rely heavily on the action “Player versus Player.” But no MMORPG can establish itself in this circle of PvP giants. Why is that? Our author Schuhmann investigates this question.
The streaming platform Twitch is becoming increasingly important for the success of games. From the perspective of game companies, Twitch is the best form of marketing. Streamers discover an attractive title for themselves and play it day after day in front of tens of thousands of viewers. The game stays in the players’ consciousness, new stories develop around a game, and the press reports on it – all of which generates attention and additional buyers.
These games attract streamers and viewers. This is a closed society. The club of top titles remains pretty much to itself on Twitch.
In any order, these six titles make up the top list among themselves, unless a new title benefits from the release hype like Destiny 2.
Three things stand out when we look at the top 6 titles:
They are all pure PvP games
They are all multiplayer online games
None of them is an MMORPG
What makes PvP so much more interesting than playing against AI?
Why are viewers so into PvP?
It’s always something different – no round is like the other because the opponents are not controlled by “scripts”, but by humans. This makes the game more dynamic – something can happen at any time. PvP is unpredictable.
The competition: “Who is the best?” adds spice to every minute. PvP has an element of competitive sports. An aspect that PvE lacks: that is more like solving a pre-made problem, like filling out a crossword puzzle.
While PvE content often runs out at some point and one is done with a game, PvP stays fresh, even if almost nothing happens in a game for years – PvP makes a game more durable.
It is therefore understandable that PvP is so much more popular with viewers.
The question remains: Why doesn’t it work with MMORPGs? These are games that have grown over the years and have an active fan base. And almost every MMORPG has a PvP mode…
Every MMORPG has PvP, why doesn’t anyone want to see it?
In WoW, there are arenas, battlegrounds, and rated battlegrounds
The Elder Scrolls Online offers large PvP battles in Cyrodiil and, at the request of the player base, battlegrounds this year
Guild Wars 2 explicitly wanted to break into eSports with its battlegrounds and offers a formidable World vs. World
Blade and Soul is considered an established PvP title, especially in South Korea
In Black Desert, players fear the ganks because the PvP is so tough
ArcheAge is designed for massive guild battles over castles. ArcheAge even offers naval battles.
We don’t even want to start with MMORPGs like WildStar, which were launched with a hardcore PvP concept that has completely fizzled out
But none of these MMORPGs seem to manage to maintain interest in their PvP among a wide audience on Twitch.
The three MMORPGs currently found at least in the top 30 rank at the bottom: WoW (10), oldie Runescape (17), and Black Desert (27).
Despite MMORPGs offering a variety of PvP options, hardly anyone seems to want to watch them. What is the reason for that? Are MMORPGs not trying hard enough?
Guild Wars 2 as eSport failed – despite all efforts
One cannot say that. MMORPGs have also recognized the signs of the times early on and wanted to turn towards “PvP.” There have been repeated attempts to establish PvP in MMORPGs as eSports and as stream titles: Guild Wars 2 desperately wanted to enter the eSports arena, offered high prize money, and aimed to establish itself there as a pioneer.
However, all of these efforts seem to have simply not paid off in the long run. The last report about Guild Wars 2 eSport on our site was around April 2017: ESL closes Pro League Division in Guild Wars 2.
MMORPGs apparently have problems with the PvP aspects. What could be the reason for that?
The gameplay is often not geared towards fast action and decision-making – but often, battles develop over a longer period. The “moment-to-moment” gameplay is not exciting, it happens less frequently that a battle turns around – MMORPGs are too slow
Then, the action in many MMORPGs is hard to read – viewers often do not understand why one character emerges from a fight as the winner while the other remains on the ground: MMORPGs are not visually appealing
The actions are often not spectacular enough – also because the skill is not as easily recognizable as in a “shooter” – whether a player is aiming or hitting correctly is hard to determine from the outside: MMORPGs lack a visible skill component
and the individualization of characters through items could deter people from getting invested – things like equipment or skill building belong to the preparation for a match and have nothing to do with the match itself: MMORPGs have too much happening before the game
The next PvP MMORPGs could succeed in the market, but not necessarily on Twitch
The trend that MMORPGs cannot establish themselves as PvP games on Twitch is all the more worrying because almost all new MMORPGs will focus on PvP.
Also, the MMORPGs that will come, like Crowfall or Camelot Unchained will probably have little chance of succeeding on Twitch – for that, they are not designed.
Camelot Unchained focuses more on large sieges and battles like ESO or Guild Wars 2. Crowfall also prefers campaigns over quick and dirty 5-minute fights.
Will Amazon bring the first “Twitch MMORPG” with New World?
It seems clear by now: An MMORPG cannot establish itself as a Twitch title on the side. Allowing a PvP mode to tag along that suddenly wins the race: that apparently doesn’t work. Rather, the MMORPG has to be tailored to the “Twitch” environment from the outset.
It is interesting to consider whether at some point an MMORPG could establish itself on Twitch that was specifically developed for it?
This could succeed for Amazon’s game studios. Little is known about their new games, only that they want to fully embrace Twitch. With “New World,” there is supposedly also an MMORPG involved. However, we don’t know whether New Dawn will focus on PvP.
Perhaps the future of MMORPGs on Twitch lies in PvE after all? Here, studios would need to develop innovative concepts. And if MMORPGs have lacked anything in recent years, it has unfortunately been innovative PvE concepts.
