What is the problem with the very rare heroes? Units in Skylanders: Ring of Heroes possess a certain base number of stars. Usually, it holds true: Characters with a high base star count are significantly rarer than heroes that can be summoned with 2 stars. You will find soul stones for the 5-star base unit Astroblast much less frequently than for Wham-Shell, who has only 2 stars as a starting value.

This leads to the fact that it is almost impossible to level up rare units to the maximum level, as you have no way to collect the needed soul stones. Instead, you must use the summoning portal, which, however, is not a viable path for free-to-play players (F2P), as you do not find enough jewels (the real-money currency in Skylanders: Ring of Heroes) and should use them elsewhere anyway.

However, there are enough Skylanders that you can really farm without having to push your luck. But which heroes are good? We show you a selection of heroes from various roles and elements that you can easily bring to the highest level with a bit of patience, where they won’t have to hide behind the other top heroes.

Note: This is not a representation of the absolute best units in the game. Top heroes like Astroblast, Buckshot, or Knight Mare hide behind a gigantic paywall, which F2P players may not even be able to break through for months. The heroes listed here are also presented in random order.

Ka-Boom – Explosions, Baby!

Why is Ka-Boom so good: Ka-Boom can not only achieve high attack values but also make his opponents explode, causing massive bonus damage after a few rounds. This makes the unit an excellent choice in longer boss fights. However, all of his other attacks are also specially efficient at high levels and hit more than one opponent.

This skills does Ka-Boom bring: Ka-Boom has only three active skills from which you can choose. Due to his low base star count of 2, however, Ka-Boom does not have any passive or leader skills.

• Traptanium Cannons (Active) – Fires cannonballs at an opponent and reduces their attack power for 1 round. Hits a random second opponent twice.
• Cannon Jump (Active) – The cannon jump triggers the explode effect on the opponent, which takes effect after 6 rounds and causes strong bonus damage. In its awakened form, the cannon jump hits all opponents.
• Rocket Rain (Active) – The rocket rain is especially effective against boss opponents. Ka-Boom focuses for 9 seconds and then attacks. This attack removes 3 buffs from the opponent, and there is a 30% chance the opponent will be critically hit.

Which skills should I use when? In the arena and normal missions, you should use the Traptanium Cannons and the Cannon Jump. For boss fights, you swap the cannonballs for Rocket Rain. Although it takes Ka-Boom longer to execute the skill, he inflicts significantly more damage.

Which runes should I equip for Ka-Boom? Ka-Boom is an attack unit, so you should definitely equip 4 attack runes to receive the set bonus of +25% attack. The remaining two slots should be invested in focus runes to increase the accuracy of the explosion attacks.

Where can I find the soul stones for Ka-Boom? The best thing about Ka-Boom is undoubtedly the fact that you can farm his soul stones relatively easily and early in the game. To bring Ka-Boom to the awakened form with the maximum of 6 stars, you need a whopping 1175 soul stones, but these can also be farmed swiftly with a mediocre team.

To do this, go to world 3 (Hellish Volcano) in stages 3.1 to 3.6 on normal difficulty. You unlock this once you defeat the boss on the easy difficulty. Use a strong water or tech unit, as these are particularly effective against the fire monsters there. Use auto-battle to speed up the process.

By the way, it is sufficient to farm mission 3.1. The obtained soul stones are completely random and do not differ between 3.1 and 3.6. However, the enemies in 3.1 are easier to defeat and therefore speed up the farming process.

How long does it take to farm all the soul stones: To obtain 1175 soul stones, you need to farm approximately 52 hours and invest 15,600 energy at an average of 3 soul stones per ten battles. After all, you also receive soul stones for the villain Smoke Scream, whom you can definitely fully upgrade as soon as you have gathered all the soul stones for Ka-Boom.

Boomer – Ka-Boom’s Wingman

Why is Boomer so good: Like Ka-Boom, Boomer is a unit specializing in explosions. Accordingly, both units harmonize well together. As a bonus, Boomer can even increase the attack value of all allied units.

These skills does Boomer bring: Like Ka-Boom, Boomer has only three active skills, but they harmonize perfectly with each other.

• Dynamite Throw (Active) – This skill throws a stick of dynamite at the opponent and triggers the exploding status. When the timer runs out, the explosion causes massive bonus damage. In its awakened form, this skill even targets all opponents.
• Troll Bomb Boots (Active) – The Troll Bomb Boots deal damage to an opponent but also provide a buff to the attack value for all allies.
• Troll Demolition (Active) – With this attack, Boomer hits all opponents and reduces the explosion timer for each opponent affected by this debuff by 2 rounds.

Which skills should I use when? This depends on whether you are playing Boomer in conjunction with Ka-Boom. If you use Ka-Boom attacks that trigger explosions on opponents, you should use the Troll Bomb Boots and Troll Demolition. Also in boss fights, the Troll Demolition is helpful to make the boss explode faster.

Which runes should I equip for Boomer? Like with Ka-Boom, you should focus on the rune sets Attack (4) and Focus (2) to increase both damage output and the accuracy of the explosion attack.

Where can I find the soul stones for Boomer? To fully develop and awaken Boomer, you need 1201 soul stones. Fortunately, you can also farm soul stones for Boomer relatively easily. To do this, you must have unlocked the normal version of the abandoned factory (World 6). You can find the soul stones in stages 6.1 to 6.6 in both the normal and hard versions.

Here, it is again sufficient to farm the first mission via auto-battle. Use strong units of the Life and Earth types, as these are particularly effective against Tech units.

How long does it take to farm all the soul stones: To get all 1201 soul stones, you need to farm around 53 hours and invest 16,000 energy. This is based on an yield of 3 soul stones per 10 completed battles, assuming you can complete the 10 auto-battles in about 8 minutes.

Blast Zone – Even more explosions

Where can I find the soul stones for Blast Zone? For this unit, you also need 1201 soul stones for maximum development, which are somewhat more challenging to obtain. Specifically, you need to farm stage 3.7 (Hellish Volcano) on the easiest difficulty level.

How long does it take to farm all the soul stones: Since you only have 3 attempts per day before you can spend jewels for more attempts, the process here takes significantly longer. After all, you get 2 soul stones guaranteed after each battle with Chef Pepper Jack. To obtain all 1201 soul stones, you need to farm for 200 days (if you do not want to spend jewels).

Should I use a team consisting of Blast Zone, Boomer, and Ka-Boom? On paper, this constellation is very strong. However, in practice, you will quickly realize that your team has significant weaknesses in defense.

However, Wham-Shell has the downside that as a defender he is unable to use certain abilities to draw the attention of enemies to himself. Therefore, his high defense value is only beneficial when he is also attacked. Unfortunately, you can’t influence this.

Which skills does Wham-Shell bring? As a defense unit, Wham-Shell can increase his own defense and lower the opponent’s attack power. In addition, he has a useful passive skill that affects all allies:

• Crustacean Combos (active) – With this ability, Wham-Shell deals damage and increases his own defense with an 80% chance.
• King’s Hammer (Active) – This attack deals damage based on Wham-Shell’s defense value and lowers the target’s defense. The awakened version of the skill deals even more damage.
• Water Blessing (Passive) – The Water Blessing generates a shield for all allies with a certain probability in each round, which reduces the damage taken.

Which skills should be used when? Since Wham-Shell only has access to two active skills, this question also answers itself. Which of the two abilities you use when depends mainly on your opponent. Enemies with strong attack values should be debuffed appropriately. However, you should never neglect your defense.

• Mystical Staff (active) – This attack enhances the attack of your hero with the highest attack value.

However, the remaining soul stones are not so easy to obtain. You need to farm the boss of the seventh world, Rainbow Valley, on the hard difficulty level.

How long will it take to gather all the needed soul stones? Since you can only face the boss three times a day, it will take quite a long time to gather all the needed soul stones. Subtracting the 260 from the training missions, you need to farm 950 soul stones.
