Due to Corona, this groom’s bachelor party is canceled. But his friends can be relied upon. They are building him a Diablo RPG that he can control from isolation via Skype.
What is the situation? A group of friends built an RPG inspired by the action RPG “Diablo.” The reason was that one member of the group had to cancel his bachelor party due to Corona isolation.
The game itself was largely made out of cardboard. The groom controls a vehicle equipped with a GoPro camera from home using his PS4 controller. This shows his character’s view of the game board on his TV.
The NPCs he encounters in taverns, on the way, or as opponents during his adventure are all portrayed by his friends, who dressed up in cool costumes for the occasion. The whole thing is connected using Teamspeak, Skype, and Zoom to transmit video and audio.
How does the game proceed? First, the player starts without a weapon, like in a typical RPG. But he quickly receives his first weapon from a friendly NPC. The villagers inform him that he will face the powerful enemy “Covid.” This scoundrel forces everyone to stay inside.
Then he fights his way through various areas on the map, including a dark forest and a castle. Using items like keys dropped by enemies, he opens doors and solves puzzles. “Healing potions” consist of toilet paper and disinfectant that can be collected at various locations throughout the adventure.
All of this happens live for the player. His friends need to quickly change into new costumes when he encounters them at different locations.
The kill of the final boss ultimately happened through the “Summon Stags” spell, which the groom picked up after defeating the centaur. The spell “summoned” all his friends – each was briefly introduced in the video and demonstrated their “power.” Together, they combined their strengths to defeat the final boss “Covid XIXth.”
The entire adventure lasted about 3.5 hours. On reddit, DavidMReynolds explains what happened behind the scenes to make the game run smoothly. For example, the connection of the PS4 controller to the remote-controlled car broke, which meant that they had to rely on the groom’s voice commands quite early in the adventure.
