The world of online games, especially Destiny 2, is a stage for epic battles, heroic stories, and unforgettable teamwork. For players like Christian¹ , this virtual fight also means dealing with prejudices and misunderstandings due to his Tourette syndrome. MeinMMO spoke with him about his experiences.

This is the ironic reality with Tourette: Christian is a passionate gamer and a Guardian. His journey into the world of Destiny began in 2014 with hopes for epic adventures, many triumphs, and shared victories.

However, his greatest challenge has nothing to do with the enemies in the game but with his own uncontrollable tics. He has been afflicted with what’s called “Tourette syndrome” since the age of six.

• The crux of the problem with Tourette lies in the verbal tics that Christian inevitably emits during gaming sessions in Destiny 2.
• These statements, which come out of his mouth uncontrollably, are often offensive or contain curse words, some of which are personal.
• For years, using the LFG system or being accepted long-term in clans has been made difficult for him.

Although Christian has always informed other Destiny players about his condition, they often interpret his sudden verbal outbursts as malicious attacks. For this reason, he has already been kicked out of a total of seven clans and usually has to play alone.

MeinMMO played Destiny 2 with him and discussed his experiences, problems, and concerns as a Guardian with Tourette syndrome.

Having Tourette is like light and darkness

You are constantly afraid of being banned: When considering Christian’s experiences in Destiny 2, it becomes clear that better awareness about Tourette in team play is urgently needed. Although Christian always communicates his illness directly, there are significant misunderstandings that have even led to multiple clan expulsions.

Christian has been affected by all forms of Tourette syndrome, meaning coprolalia, copropraxia, echolalia, and echopraxia. What this precisely means has been summarized in this info box for you.

But regardless of the form someone is affected by: It is important to emphasize that Tourette does not signify intention or rudeness, but represents a neurological disorder.

MeinMMO: “Christian, can you tell us about a specific situation in which your Tourette was particularly challenging in Destiny 2 and how the groups and teams reacted?”

When you are in raids, dungeons, or other challenging activities in Destiny together, many find my tics disturbing. For example, I was with an LFG group in a raid, and of course, I reminded them beforehand that I have vocal tics with somewhat unpleasant utterances. Everyone said it was okay. When we were in the raid and it took longer to defeat the boss due to my Tourette, I was kicked from the team. Luckily, the boss dropped loot in the post office. However, that was unfortunately not the only situation in Destiny where I experienced such treatment from other players.

Christian reports to us

MeinMMO: “Why do you think some Destiny players, despite knowing from the beginning that you have Tourette, still cannot handle it long-term?”

Christian: “When statements arise that specifically refer to the years 1930 to 1945, involve religions, or also more harmless statements, like when someone dies during a jump phase and my Tourette then says ‘You noob’, it unfortunately still gets quickly interpreted as a personal attack. It’s easier to hit the Ignore button in a figurative sense.”

MeinMMO: “Is it true that you have influence over your Tourette? Some might suggest that you simply suppress it while gaming and then you wouldn’t have problems in Destiny 2.”

Christian: “Yes, for a while I can definitely suppress my tics. But at some point, the tics build up so much that it’s no longer possible for me. Then it becomes so extreme that the tics burst out of me like an explosion. It can last continuously for 1-2 minutes. There are medications for Tourette syndrome, but they are still in the experimental stage and cause severe side effects for me, so I don’t want to rely on them. I’d rather tic a bit.”

Destiny 2 players can sometimes be more toxic than Tourette

Insults are not tolerated – even unintentional: Destiny 2 sets clear boundaries for verbal outbursts, as we reported recently. Players who, for example, stand out in PvP due to insulting messages risk a permanent ban.

However, Christian’s case also highlights the dilemma between the need to rid the gaming environment of toxic behavior and the understanding of the uncontrollable tics of people with Tourette.

Bungie wants everyone in Destiny 2 to feel welcome – including players with disabilities. Therefore, the developer always evaluates the “entire gameplay and behavior [of a player] for violations.” We wanted to know from Christian if he has had any contact with Bungie regarding this, where he may have been reported by other players because of his Tourette.

Christian: “Yes, that’s always possible. Unfortunately, I always have to be prepared for a ban. In the game “World of Tanks”, for example, I was once banned for 7 days in 2020 because of my Tourette.

I immediately disputed it, but the developer Wargaming told me that they make no distinction between insulting behavior caused by illness and toxic behavior. Unfortunately. However, I have not had any “conflict” with Bungie regarding this yet.

Players need to become more tolerant: Christian’s biggest problem, aside from the fear of being banned, is still acceptance in the Destiny 2 community.

• When players with Tourette are kicked out of clans or activities without explanation, it not only leads to social exclusion but also exacerbates the misunderstanding and stigmatization of those suffering from this neurological disorder.

This is an experience that surely not only Christian has made. He doesn’t want to accept it any longer but has decided to raise awareness. Especially since he enjoys playing Destiny 2 as a team and does not wish to impose further limitations on himself due to his illness.

MeinMMO: “Do you think that education and awareness about Tourette within the gaming community of Destiny 2 could help reduce prejudices and create a tolerant environment?”

Christian: “Absolutely! I also hope that through my attempt, others gain more appreciation and acceptance. In particular, platform providers and developers should not treat everything as toxicity and sanction it immediately.

I am not only banned from games. I was also banned on Xbox for 10 weeks due to my Tourette because people felt offended. I have long felt that there should be an equal standard for everyone, allowing for explanations in such cases. I do not do this intentionally.

In my case, I always carry my diagnosis with me to explain my strange behavior. This also applies in the real world. For example, my Tourette gets severely triggered by the police, and then the coprolalia flows out like a waterfall. So I am used to explaining myself, but I wish it were easier, especially with gaming platforms and developers.”

Good communication is key

With humor, everything is easier: Naturally, the understanding and respect for those affected by a Tourette condition should be at the forefront. After all, it is not a conscious decision or the intention to permanently insult others.

When we gamed with Christian, for example, a teammate noted that he really stinks at the kills and generated orbs. To which Christian’s Tourette responded with “Then use some deodorant!” Just one of the many funny situations in which we got to know Christian.

Thus, we were able to experience that “his personal gremlin,” as Christian calls his Tourette syndrome, can often be offensive or racist, but can also be funny. Despite all the laughter, one must not forget that Tourette is still a true hell for many affected.

MeinMMO: “How do you see it, Christian? What is your wish for how others handle you and the tics? Do you have a problem when people laugh about your Tourette, indirectly about you? Or are you easygoing about it?”

Christian: “No, I think people should treat Tourette and me with humor and respect, in other words: laugh with me about it. However, it must also be said that each person is different and deals with their Tourette syndrome in their own way. So I can only speak for myself. But good communication is always key.”

Christian: “My everyday life is indeed special. The worst example is my Terrortics. They make it necessary to pre-register at many places in public life. This is especially necessary at airports or on trains and also results in a significant time commitment. This necessity underscores the additional hurdles that people like me with Tourette face in everyday life. Furthermore, it often comes with the feeling of being watched and stared at, which can further impair social interaction.

I have also been taken into custody by the police because of my Tourette – so it is not always easy and I have many uncomfortable experiences. At that time, I also had to wait a long time until the public prosecutor returned my freedom to me.”
