The new Deathmatch map Petra is causing excitement. As soon as it found its way into the game with the Overwatch Anniversary Event, players have already discovered hints about the next hero and more.
Mysterious messages on the new Deathmatch map: With the Overwatch Anniversary Event 2018, the Deathmatch map Petra made its way into Overwatch. Petra is an archaeological site in Jordan, where apparently an ancient temple or palace is being excavated.
Resourceful players have taken a closer look at the map. Some details hidden in data pads and on open laptops hint at a puzzle that goes beyond the map.
What was found?
A data pad with two names: Near the tent on a cliff lies a data pad on a box. It has a short text in which a “H. Faisal” thanks an unknown person for continuing to fund the excavation in Petra and Ilios. The unknown H. Faisal mentions another name: Dr. Nachareon.
In addition to Ilios and Petra itself, a short text also mentions another project in Thailand. This presumably refers to Ayutthaya, the “Capture the Flag” map, which was introduced in a past event.
A laptop with more clues: The open laptop contains a conversation between Faisal and an “Ioannidis”. They discuss archaeological finds. Ioannidis reports the discovery of three statues of the goddesses Hera, Aphrodite, and Athena in an undisclosed temple.
The statues are already visible: One of them is in Rialto, the recently added payload map. Another can be found on Ilios, and the last one in Château Guillard, Widowmaker’s castle.
Throughout the conversation, Faisal also mentions a hidden chamber that the archaeologists have found in Petra. The chamber they can explore through a gap is presumably the small treasure room behind a partially destroyed wall.
What fans see in it
With all the new finds on the new map, theories are running wild: What is Blizzard hinting at?
Hints about the next hero: Some fans see in the texts a hint that the next hero will be of Greek origin and somehow related to the excavations.
Others speculate about Dr. Nachareon, whose name is a reference to the river in the Greek underworld, Acheron. He is supposed to be a Greek villain with dark powers – like the Talon leader whom Reaper shoots in the “Retribution” event and who, according to fans, was “too well” designed for all the other Talon troops to seem so generic.
A new layer for Petra or another map: Another theory is that the hinted rooms in the conversation contain new maps. The hidden chamber in Petra would be one way to reveal the “deeper chambers” in the unknown temple.
