The shooter Overwatch is still in beta – and might not get a ranked game mode by the launch. So will it stay completely “casual”?
Better late than never
Blizzard’s first shooter Overwatch has been available in closed beta for a few weeks, but some testers are slowly becoming dissatisfied. Many players wish for a progression system where they can notice tangible successes for characters. While such a system is considered almost confirmed (as rewards in the form of spray logos have already been data-mined), the focus has so far been on a ranked game mode.
Now Jeff Kaplan, the game director, has spoken up and answered the question about a ranked game mode.
“We are excited about ranked play. If this feature doesn’t make it to launch, it will be something we focus on after launch.”
Thus, it is confirmed that Overwatch will get a ranked game mode with leaderboards – anything else would have been unacceptable for the eSports fans. For many in the scene, Overwatch is seen as “the next big thing” in the realm of eSports. However, the absence of such a feature also raises the suspicion that Overwatch might appear incomplete and that the developers might already be running out of time.
