The ranked game mode of Overwatch brings golden weapons for all characters… and a new currency.
New Currency for Ranked Games
Overwatch has only been released for a few weeks, but soon major changes and innovations are expected. The ranked game mode is set to be implemented later this month. This will not only provide a more competitive environment for those who want to compete but also some new cosmetic upgrades.
In a previous interview, Jeff Kaplan, the game director of Overwatch, hinted that there could be “golden weapons” as a reward for the ranked game mode. This hint seems to have now come true.
A test server for the Korean version of the game is currently available, where “Ranked Play” and the new rewards can already be viewed.
Each character will have a new form of personalization, the aforementioned golden weapons. However, these cannot be purchased with credits, but through a new currency that is earned for participating in the ranked game mode – those who are more successful will likely receive more currency and thus acquire the golden weapons faster.
As in Heroes of the Storm, 10 games are required to determine the starting rank in Overwatch as well. After that, players are matched with opponents of approximately equal skill. From there on, it follows the typical ups and downs of the ranking system: victories lead to rank increases, while losses lead to drops.
Other ideas now seem to be becoming reality as well: A season will last for 3 months. At least according to the PTR, the first season is expected to end on August 18, but this may just be settings from the test server. It is also possible that there will be a “preseason” or “trial season” during which Blizzard tests the new systems.
A release date for the patch is still pending, but if Blizzard keeps its plans, only June 29 remains as a release date.
