Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor loses a popular mode and will soon no longer be playable online. This is despite the fact that other games increasingly focus on online features.
What will be shut down? The developers of the action RPG Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor explain that some online features will be disabled. These have contributed significantly to the enjoyment of the game. Among the features that you will soon no longer be able to use are:
- The Nemesis Forge will no longer be available. Players will not be able to transfer their nemeses from Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor to Middle-earth: Shadow of War.
- Vendetta missions and leaderboards will no longer be available.
- WBPlay will no longer be available, but the epic runes Orc Slayer and Gravewalker will be automatically granted to all players.
Online features will soon be gone
When will these features be shut down? The developers indicate December 31, 2020. After that, you can of course continue to play the game as a pure single-player title – or switch to its successor Middle-earth: Shadow of War – which incidentally is one of the free games on PS4 for PS Plus members in November.
Why is this unfortunate? These are exciting online features that will be missing from the action RPG starting next year. Especially the Vendetta missions have created thrilling situations. Through this feature, it is possible to take revenge on players who have defeated one of your friends on your friends list.
Moreover, the online features represent an important reason to continue playing the action RPG, which is why more and more games are incorporating such features. Through the leaderboard, you can compare yourself with others and see if you can rank up, and of course, the vendetta system motivated many to check back regularly.
What reason is given for shutting down the features? The developers do not give a reason. It is only announced on Steam that these functions will be shut down on December 31.
Why do players view this as a problem? On one hand, it is of course a pity that these functions will soon be gone. On the other hand, they provide players with some achievements that they will no longer be able to obtain starting in 2021.
You only earn Repaid in Blood by completing a Vendetta mission.
Additionally, you must qualify on the leaderboards to earn the achievements “Lord of the Ring” and “The Hunt is my Mistress”. How these achievements will be managed after the shutdown of the online features of Shadow of Mordor is unknown.
