The PlayStation 5 has now launched worldwide and is receiving a lot of praise – but there is also some criticism. The shooter expert Sven Galitzki from MeinMMO is basically annoyed by only one thing about the new Sony console – but that one thing is significant.
Many have been waiting for this: After the new next-gen console launched on November 12 in the USA and some other countries, the PS5 has been available in Germany since November 19.
Finally, German and European players can also get their hands on the PlayStation 5 and make their own experiences with it. Overall, the PS5 is doing well so far. However, there is also criticism – such as some technical teething problems.
By the way, the first are already playing, others are worried and cursing – How was your PS5 launch?
This is what I think of the PlayStation 5 so far
This is what I like: I have personally completely escaped from these teething problems. MeinMMO received a PS5 to test even before the Germany release by Sony. And since I got it on November 11, I have not experienced a single problem, hiccup, or anything similar with it.
In short: I am thoroughly excited about the PS5 so far. Well, almost thoroughly.
- The performance is strong – whether with PS5 games like Demon’s Souls, PS4 games with next-gen upgrades like No Man’s Sky, or my old PS4 gems The Division 2 or Destiny 2 via the backward compatibility.
- I find the new user interface intuitive and well-done
- I have not heard the PS5 once with any game – no matter how much was happening on the screen
- The loading times are amazing compared to the PS4 Pro.
- The DualSense controller is really fun with its haptic feedback and adaptive triggers.
This annoys me: But still, there is one thing that really annoys me about the new PlayStation. Although one could have seen it coming, I did not think it would actually bother me so much in the end. It’s about the available storage space.
Yes, the PS5 has an ultra-fast SSD. And you can feel that – whether with new or old titles. But if you do not remove the pre-installed Astro’s Playroom, you will only have 667 GB of free storage for games, apps, and media available.
The problem is: If you like to have multiple games on the console that you switch between, the 667 GB can fill up quite quickly.
I have
- Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare including Warzone
- Destiny 2
- The Division 2
- as well as some smaller games like Dead Cells
on the PlayStation 5. I also had Elite Dangerous, Spider-Man, or Anthem on it in between. But I always had to delete them again because for example Call of Duty could not install an update – not enough space…
In short: I had to nearly halve my regular circle of favorite games that I also had installed on my PS4 Pro on the PS5. Not by storage space but by the number of games.
What is also problematic: Yes, you can connect external hard drives or SSDs to the PS5. However, PS5 games cannot be stored on them and only run on the internal PS5 SSD, as they are designed for its high speed. External SSDs or storage media are only intended for PS4 games. But when I see how quickly The Division 2 loads on the PS5, I don’t want to move this game to a slower drive.
But unfortunately, you cannot currently expand the fast internal storage of the PlayStation 5 – and that is what annoys me the most so far or the only thing at all about the PS5: fast, free storage is scarce and cannot be expanded.
This is the current status regarding storage expansion: It will be possible to expand the PS5 with an internal M.2 SSD that is supposed to be as fast as the already integrated one. However, when that will actually happen – no one knows.
Currently, there is still no official list of certified models that are eligible for use in the PS5. And the designated slot is also initially disabled and is only to be unlocked with a system software update when the time comes.
Sony itself even currently advises against purchasing until it has released further details on recommended drives.
This is what I hope for: I hope that Sony will quickly publish a list of compatible SSDs. Because there are still one or two games that I would like to have on the console without having to sacrifice the others. And to be honest, people quickly get used to good things. And I simply do not want to miss the fast loading times of the PS5 – not even with my old PS4 gems. Before I got the PS5, I didn’t see that as a problem, but now it annoys me much more than I anticipated.
How do you currently view the PS5? How is it with you? What do you think so far of the PS5? What do you like best about the new console? What annoys you?
Or are you still worried about your PlayStation and hoping to receive it soon or even this year?
Can you still get a PS5 before Christmas? This is the current status
