During this year’s Jump Festa, one of the largest manga events of the year, Netflix announced that One Piece will receive an anime remake. The epic anime, which includes over 1000 episodes, will be completely animated from the beginning – perfect for those who want to start fresh.
What is One Piece?
- One Piece is a manga, a Japanese comic. It has been drawn by Eiichiro Oda since 1997 and now includes over 1050 individual chapters in over 107 volumes.
- Since 1999, a weekly anime based on the manga has been airing, which also now includes over 1000 episodes.
- The One Piece universe now includes several anime movies, stage shows, and a live-action adaptation produced by Netflix.
- The story follows the adventures of the young pirate Monkey D. Luffy, who wants to become the King of the Pirates.
One Piece has enjoyed worldwide popularity for years. However, many shy away from the series due to its large scope. With the live-action adaptation (see trailer) and the new anime, Netflix now offers two good entry points for those who are curious.

What exactly did Netflix announce? During Jump Festa 2023, Netflix announced a new anime for One Piece: With The One Piece, the manga source material by Eiichiro Oda will be completely re-animated, starting with the chapters of the East Blue arcs.

Currently, The One Piece is still in the production phase. The project is being supervised by representatives from the publishing manga publisher Shueisha, the Japanese TV network Fuji Television Network, and the anime studio Toei Animation, which is producing the first anime comprising over 1000 episodes.
Where might you know Wit Studio from? Wit Studio will animate The One Piece. The anime studio became known for the first three seasons of the epic Attack on Titan, which was finally completed by Studio Mappa in 2023.

When can you watch The One Piece and where? The One Piece will be exclusively available worldwide on Netflix according to the announcement. This makes sense as Netflix is the driving force behind the production. However, since the Fuji Television Network is also involved, a free TV broadcast at least in Japanese television could be under discussion.
When the first episodes will flicker across your screens is unfortunately still unknown. There are usually years between the first announcement and the final release of anime series: the production of animated series remains labor-intensive and time-consuming even today, even with the most modern technology.
It is also not yet known in what rhythm and format the adaptation will appear. The current anime is released weekly, which would be unusual for the streaming provider. A block release of individual seasons adapting entire arcs could also be possible. It is also currently unclear whether it will be a traditional series or even a film series.
