5. Crocus
Who is he? Crocus is an older man who lives inside Laboon. Laboon is a giant whale who has been waiting for his friends for over 50 years, namely the former pirate crew that Brook was also part of.
Crocus lovingly cares for Laboon, who constantly rams his head against the Red Line out of sadness. He is a doctor and the guardian of the lighthouse at Reverse Mountain, which marks the entrance to the Grand Line.
What makes him iconic? Although Crocus spent most of his life as a lighthouse keeper, he served as a doctor in the crew of Gol D. Roger for three years. According to Silvers Rayleigh, he was the best doctor in the world at that time – and the only one capable of alleviating Roger’s illness.
After Luffy makes friends with Laboon and promises the whale that they will meet again, Crocus notices Luffy’s resemblance to Gol D. Roger. Before the Straw Hats move on, he gives Nami his personal log pose. Crocus gave it as thanks because the Straw Hats prevented Laboon from injuring himself even more.
In One Piece, there are quite a few iconic characters whom Luffy meets on his journey. However, there is also an important family member in his life who remains completely in the shadows and about whom very little is known. His mother has never actually made an appearance: A member of Luffy’s family you probably won’t ever get to see in One Piece
