Fans of one of the most popular board games ever can look forward to Steam to embark on conquering the galaxy.
Which game is being talked about? It’s Twilight Imperium Digital, the digital version of the popular board game that was released in 1997. In a comprehensive ranking on BoardGameGeek.com, an English website about board games, Twilight Imperium ranks 6th among the most popular board games of all time.
With an official announcement trailer, a PC version of the game has now been confirmed. This will be developed by Red Square Games and will be available on Steam.

A faithful adaptation of the board game
What is the game about? As in the original, you lead one of several space civilizations in Twilight Imperium Digital. These should play uniquely thanks to asymmetric powers and play styles. As the leader of your faction, your goal is to gain control over the galaxy. You will use not only military but also diplomacy, trade, and politics.
- Twilight Imperium starts on Steam with the 17 factions from the base game. Those that came later with expansions will not be available at release.
- The complete rules of the 4th Edition will be implemented.
- Those who do not want to play Twilight Imperium with friends or strangers on the internet can also easily face off against AI opponents in the Steam version.
AI opponents create anticipation – but also skepticism
How is the announcement being received by fans? The possibility to play Twilight Imperium against the AI is positively received by fans. Reddit user CarpenterWannabe writes under a post from the developers: “My God … this has been a wish of mine since I played my first IRL game.”
Other fans are concerned about the AI. Regarding the trailer on YouTube, plzletmebefrank comments: “Cool. But … AI will be a real challenge for such a game.” It remains to be seen how the developers will adjust mechanics like diplomacy so that they also work in the game against the computer.
That no expansions for the board game are included at release also frustrates fans. “I can’t imagine playing without Prophecy of Kings because it adds a lot of depth and variety without raising the complexity too much,” writes Azrielemantia on Reddit.
