While they are still rare in Game of Thrones, dragons in House of the Dragon are noble creatures used by the Targaryens. However, not all can be tamed. One of the most dangerous was a significant threat not only to humans.
During the time of the series House of the Dragon, not only the Targaryens are in power, but there are also some dragons used by the family. However, some dragons cannot be tamed by the Targaryens. The so-called wild dragons act independently on Dragonstone, and the arguably most dangerous of them is the Cannibal (The Cannibal).
A Threat to the Dragons Themselves
What kind of dragon was the Cannibal? It is unclear when he hatched. He is described as the oldest of the wild dragons. Assumptions suggest that he might have lived on Dragonstone even before the Targaryens arrived in 114 BC – but that is just a legend.
He is smaller than Vhagar and Vermithor but larger than the other wild dragons Sheepstealer and Grey Ghost. He is covered in black scales and has green eyes. His greatest feature, as his name suggests, is that he feeds on his own kind. He ate dead dragons, as well as young ones and dragon eggs.
His focus on young dragons and dragon eggs would, according to Marvelous Videos on YouTube, also be a possible explanation for the dragon population. While there are more than during the time of Game of Thrones, the creatures on Dragonstone actually have no natural enemies, so there should be more of them.
Though attempts were made to tame him, they ended in death. In the year 192 AC, Jacaerys Velaryon called other dragon riders to tame wild dragons. Silver Denys tried with Sheepstealer, but they were disturbed by the Cannibal. Sheepstealer was driven away, and Silver Denys and his sons were devoured.
The Disappearance of the Cannibal Dragon
What happened to the dragon? As one knows from Game of Thrones, the 3 dragons of Daenerys are the first sighting of the creatures after over a century. Many of the known dragons died in battle during the Dance of the Dragons, the Targaryen civil war (129–131 AC). Only 4 survived: Sheepstealer, Silverwing, Morning, and the Cannibal.
It remains unclear what happened to him after the Dance. It is only known of one dragon, Balerion, that he died naturally. Regarding the Cannibal, it is only known that he disappeared. One could assume that he could not follow his instincts anymore after the dragons began to die out. The last dragon before Daenerys’s died in the year 153 AC.
Will the Cannibal appear in Season 3 of House of the Dragon? So far, there is no official information on this, but it is not impossible. In the series, it is at exactly the time when he was wreaking havoc, and one has already seen a wild dragon, Sheepstealer.
As in previous seasons, the writers of the series could also deviate from the books and give the Cannibal a different role in the story. They also changed the story of the dragon Sheepstealer. Instead of the character Nettles, Rhaena Targaryen seems to be able to form a bond with him.
