Although Project: Gorgon has been in Early Access for over 7 years on Steam and is one of the highest-rated MMORPGs on the platform, it only attracts a few players. Perhaps the upcoming release can change that.
What kind of MMORPG is this? Project: Gorgon is an indie MMORPG from the studio Elder Game, aiming to take you back to the times of EverQuest 1 and Asheron’s Call. The immersive experience in the world is at the forefront. There is no fixed class system. Instead, you decide which skills to learn, combine, and master.
Utilize alchemy for massive explosions or create a golem companion. Tame animals, train them, breed them, and use them in combat or sell them. Master necromancy and summon an army of the dead. Or find out how you can make life difficult for your opponents even as a transformed cow.
“Offers everything I have missed in other games”
What else sets Project: Gorgon apart? The MMORPG also gives you a lot of freedom when exploring the world. For example, you can write your own texts or even entire books and present them to other players in the world – for instance, to make a name for yourself as a poet or author.
All items you sell to NPC merchants remain there, allowing other players to buy them. Those who turn their good items into gold in the starting area can easily support passing newcomers.
Although Project: Gorgon seems technically outdated and out of time, the MMORPG has always received very positive reviews for its Early Access version on Steam. Specifically, 86 percent of the 2,462 ratings so far are positive. This has secured a top spot in our ranking of the highest-rated MMORPGs on Steam (currently: 4th place) for years.
- Gerugon has almost 400 hours logged and celebrates on Steam: “Yes, it’s not graphically stunning, but it reminds me of the online games of the 90s and has a great atmosphere. […] Overall, I can only recommend the game so far, especially for people who don’t follow the mainstream.”
- Rei Ayanami praises on Steam after almost 170 hours: “The game has special features that are rare in MMOs. I think the game is very good. It cannot be denied that it needs some polishing. Nevertheless, I enjoy it more than modern MMOs, where everything has to be ‘quick and fast.'”
- jujan goes even further in his review on Steam after 150 hours: “I’ll keep it brief, it’s the best MMORPG I have ever played. It offers everything I have missed in other games. I’ve been searching for a game like this for years.”
The small number of reviews and the statistics on steamdb.info show, however, that hardly anyone has tried Project: Gorgon so far. Fewer than 300 people are online at the same time on the servers. At its peak over 7 years ago, there were only 677.
Perhaps that will change when the game leaves Early Access on January 28, 2026, and celebrates its final release. The developers announced the date on Steam. Whether the current purchase price of 24.50 Euros will increase, as hinted in the FAQ from Early Access, is unclear.
