MeinMMO editor Patrick Freese bought a lot of hardware for his PC in 2020. However, the new WQHD monitor is one of his highlights. Why, you will find out here.
Since I was 12, I’ve been dealing with PCs. That’s almost 20 years ago now, and during all that time, I’ve learned and bought quite a bit. For myself, my friends, and my family, I regularly assemble PCs. As a result, I am intensively engaged with hardware.
For the last 5 years, an Asus VG248QE served as my main monitor. It was already a sporty device in 2015. 24 inches, 1 ms response time, and proud 144 Hz. However, it was “only” Full HD.
But I didn’t care about the resolution. I usually keep my hardware until it no longer works and needs to be replaced. That’s why I didn’t change the monitor until October 2020.
However, issues with the device (burned-in browser interfaces, problems when turning on) ultimately led to the need for a new one. I read up for a few days to find out what was right for me. My conclusion: Now it’s time to take the step towards WQHD. My PC is strong enough.
I don’t necessarily need 4K on the computer, as I have that with my Xbox Series X on the TV.
This is how I selected the right monitor
The agony of choice: You all probably know the next step. You now know what the hardware needs to achieve. In my case: 27 inches, WQHD, good response times, G-Sync, IPS panel, no less than 144 Hz, and just a beautiful picture.
Now, you still have to decide on a brand and model. And user opinions on hardware can be found in abundance on the internet. If you ask many people, you’ll get many opinions.
- The good: Many user opinions on new products
- The bad: They range from very good to very bad for each model
I looked at Rtings.com and sorted there by highly rated models in my price range. For my favorites, I then watched YouTube videos on different channels to see the parts in action.
That quickly paid off. After about 2 days, I had a model in mind that should adorn my desk. I preferred to skim the user opinions on the internet. I also wanted to make my own experiences and could, if necessary, make use of the return policy.
Which monitor did I choose? Initially, I decided on the LG 27GN850, which I ordered from Amazon. However, the delivery did not take about 3 days as announced, but kept getting delayed. Sure, I could have waited. But the trend indicated that it would take longer and longer. After about 14 days, I canceled the order and then chose the monitor that I had chosen as my second favorite.
The ASUS TUF Gaming VG27AQ. It also met all my requirements and was delivered the day after I ordered it.

That’s why the purchase was so important
This is what’s better about gaming now: I admit, it was initially a bit of an adjustment to play on such a large monitor with the new resolution. Text is smaller, the display is bigger. I first logged into WoW – I had just updated it. Just to take a look. And even here, in a game that doesn’t have the best graphics, I was convinced of the purchase of the Asus monitor.
The colors are bright and really present. A shimmer of an effect twirls in the different shades of red around my character. Everything is just beautiful that is happening on my display.
Especially compared to the washed-out TN panel I was using before.
I’ve been using the monitor for 2 months now and can say:
- I enjoy watching cutscenes in games. The larger picture and the rich colors are simply fun in combination.
- I perceive content from games quite differently due to the new, sharper resolution. Everything now feels like “next-gen” on the PC.
That’s why it was important: My PC has long been powerful enough to deliver good performance at WQHD. I rode the Full HD wave over the past years and was happy with it. This is mainly because I didn’t have a stronger monitor to compare it to. I didn’t feel any performance limits with my old model. Everything ran wonderfully at 1080p.
With the new monitor, I no longer limit myself and my PC. I can now get real performance out of my computer. It previously only half-heartedly loaded a few textures and is now really getting into gear.
New games like Microsoft’s Flight Simulator, which tempts with compelling textures and particularly many details, I can now really enjoy. For me, the purchase only turned out to be important afterward. Because now I see before me what I missed in previous years.
