The Overpower mechanic is currently in the spotlight when it comes to making damage numbers in Diablo 4 shoot up. With Season 9, Blizzard is nerfing the mechanic. We summarize the highlights from the patch notes for you.
These are the highlights from the patch:
- The patch for Season 9 in Diablo 4弱ens the Overpower mechanic that was key for OP builds in Season 8.
- The update also brings a bunch of adjustments to the classes. Some skills and uniques of the classes are nerfed, while others benefit from buffs.
- The HP increase of monsters per level in the pit is reduced, allowing more builds to reach Qual level 4. Since the difficulty adjustment in Season 8, Qual 4 has no longer been reachable for every player.
Additionally, there are some bug fixes. Patch 2.3.0 is also the update for the launch of Season 9 on Tuesday, July 1, 2025. You can find the complete patch notes on page 2 of our article, currently only available in English. As soon as the German version is released, the article will be updated. Note: They are extensive.
Additive damage percentage for Overpower is removed
How is the Overpower mechanic nerfed? The additive damage percentage of Overpower, based on hit points and fortify amounts, is removed. Previously, a nerf of about 80% was discussed – that this is not enough has been shown by the PTR.
Specifically, Blizzard writes in the patch notes:
On the PTR, we tested a reduction of these additive values by 80%, but found that builds based on Overpower were still superior to other options – partly due to this inherent bonus. Overpower now grants up to 50%[x] damage when triggered – similar to critical hits. However, Overpower is supposed to occur less frequently than crits and primarily triggered by guaranteed sources. Therefore, the damage from Overpower effects is generally still higher than comparable crit effects.
What adjustments are made to the classes? The Barbarian receives a few nerfs. For example, “Impact” will now replace “Impactful Strike” in a fortification recipe. Additionally, Earthquake damage and corresponding bonuses are reduced for many skills.
Druids receive buffs for passive skills and certain aspects. The Necromancer also receives improvements, primarily for bone builds and the golem. For the Hunter, the unique bow “Eaglehorn” may become more useful.
The Hydras of Sorceresses will play more fluidly. They will attack immediately after being summoned – unless the skill is spammed. But especially the Spiritborn will benefit from the patch. According to Diablo expert wudijo, the rake build will be “totally crazy” and likely belong to the S-tier builds (via Twitch).
Blizzard also makes an adjustment to the pit: The HP increase of monsters per tier will be slightly reduced. This should give more builds a chance to advance to the highest Qual tier. In general, the endgame activities in Season 9 will receive a permanent update.
