No TES VI due to The Elder Scrolls Online and Fallout 4

At gamescom, Pete Hines, Vice President of Bethesda Softworks, was asked when a new entry in the single-player series of The Elder Scrolls could be expected. His answer is likely to disappoint many fans of the series.

Pete Hines explained that we will have to wait a long time for the announcement of the next game from Bethesda. This is partly because the entire team is currently focused on the completion of the post-apocalyptic RPG Fallout 4 and only then can they properly begin development on a new game. Secondly, this is also due to The Elder Scrolls Online.

The focus is currently on ESO instead of a new single-player RPG

The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited is an important game for Bethesda. A lot of time and money has been invested to develop a long-lasting The Elder Scrolls experience for PC and consoles. They plan to support the MMORPG with new content for a very long time.

The decision makes sense, as this would create competition for themselves. If The Elder Scrolls VI were to be released soon, many ESO players might leave to focus on single-player adventures. Bethesda logically wants to prevent this. Fans of The Elder Scrolls should play ESO for as long as possible. This is likely also in the interest of Zenimax Online, the developer studio that handles the online branch.

The Elder Scrolls VI or something else?

For this reason, it would not be surprising if Bethesda were to focus on another game before The Elder Scrolls VI. Perhaps a new brand aimed at fantasy fans, while not detracting from ESO. It is also unclear what timeframe Pete Hines’ words “a long time” exactly encompasses. We therefore suspect it may take more than a year until a new Bethesda game is announced.

As seen with Fallout 4, an announcement does not necessarily mean that fans will have to wait years for the completed game. Fallout 4 was unveiled in early June 2015 and is set to release on November 10, 2015. Fans can look forward to what Bethesda will develop next and when it will be released.
