Nintendo has introduced its latest Switch model. However, the new OLED model is not necessarily what users expected from a “Nintendo Switch Pro“. MeinMMO presents the new model.
Many users had expected that the manufacturer would announce a new console this year. A new Switch model was among the hottest rumors of E3 2021. Now, the manufacturer has indeed introduced a new model, which is set to be released on October 8, 2021.
What did Nintendo introduce? The manufacturer has now officially introduced the Nintendo Switch OLED model (via Nintendo.com). The main focus is primarily on the new display rather than an increase in performance that some users had hoped for from the next Switch model.
MeinMMO presents the new console and explains the differences compared to the current Nintendo Switch, and why the initial feedback is lukewarm.
New “Switch Pro” offers plenty of detail improvements but no more power
With the OLED model, Nintendo is making some detail improvements to its console. Here are the most important changes:
What changes:
- Instead of a 6.2-inch LED screen, the new model receives a 7-inch OLED screen. The resolution in handheld mode remains at 720p, as does the TV resolution of full HD (1080p).
- The internal storage is increased from 32 GB to 64 GB. You can also add additional storage just like the previous model.
- The OLED model gets an improved internal audio output.
- The docking station also receives a LAN port for wired internet.
What does not change? The screen resolution remains at the old resolution. There is also officially no performance upgrade for the existing hardware.
What we still don’t know: We cannot yet say whether the battery life of the OLED model will be significantly longer or at least better than that of the old Nintendo Switch, as we currently lack benchmarks or usable facts.
What does the new Nintendo Switch look like? Officially, the Nintendo Switch OLED model comes in white and neon red/blue. You can watch the full presentation of the new model in the official YouTube video embedded here:
When will the Nintendo Switch OLED model be released? The console will be officially released on October 8, 2021, and you can purchase it directly from Nintendo.
Nintendo Switch OLED model – Many users hoped for a “real” upgrade with more power
What did many users hope for? Many users had hoped that Nintendo would equip the latest model with significantly more power and a larger screen. We have also summarized the first reactions of the community on the Nintendo Switch OLED for you.
Some speculated on an even faster Nvidia graphics chip and even hoped that ray tracing or at least Nvidia’s DLSS technology would find its way onto the console. For example, the Japanese site Gamepedia speculated on a significantly improved model (via Gamepedia.jp).
Many hoped that Nintendo would introduce a Switch Pro as a meaningful upgrade either for its own console or as a new model. For many, a new Ethernet port or the OLED screen is not enough to justify purchasing the console – especially if they already own a model.
How users are reacting: For example, there is already a heated discussion about the new model on Reddit, and reactions are lukewarm (via reddit.com). There are now over 4,000 comments about the new console:
- “Guys, this is just a Switch with an OLED screen and Ethernet port.”
- “I eagerly waited to spend my hard-earned money on a Switch with better battery life and 4K. The likelihood that I will buy this is 0%.”
- “A good thing for anyone who hasn’t bought a Switch yet (and is willing to spend a few extra dollars), less good for those who wanted a performance upgrade. On the other hand, it’s not like they ever promised one.”
However, there are also comments that take the presentation in stride. Nintendo has not officially promised a “Nintendo Switch Pro” or a possible “performance upgrade,” but only speculations from some users. Many see the OLED display as a sensible upgrade.
What do you think about the new model? Do you like the improvements of the Nintendo Switch or do you think the upgrades are too few?
