One of the monsters that trainers have been expecting in Pokémon GO for a long time is Kecleon. Niantic has now commented on a possible release in an interview. We at MeinMMO have looked into what was said and have summarized all the important information for you.
What information are we talking about? The gaming magazine Eurogamer conducted an exclusive interview with Niantic (via eurogamer.net) during the Safari Zone held in Liverpool. In this interview, they talked about the future of the game and a possible release of Kecleon.
Kecleon – Is a release coming?
What kind of Pokémon is Kecleon? Kecleon is a Normal-type Pokémon from the 3rd generation. Visually, it resembles a green chameleon. Its red zigzag pattern on its belly is particularly noticeable. It also has yellow hands and feet, as well as yellow lines on its face.
Kecleon is not one of the strongest monsters, but it has a special ability. It can adapt its color to its surroundings and thus camouflage itself. Only its zigzag pattern on its belly remains unchanged.
This Normal-type Pokémon is the only monster missing in Pokémon GO in the Hoenn region. For this reason, many players have been waiting for a long time for a release. So will it finally come to the game?
This is what Niantic says about a possible release of Kecleon
As Niantic revealed in the interview with Eurogamer, a release of Kecleon is generally high on their agenda. According to their own statement, Kecleon is a very special monster for them and it should also be implemented in Pokémon GO, which takes its time.
Michael Sterenka (Director, Global Product Marketing) said the following in the interview:
Kecleon is definitely a special Pokémon, one that has unique characteristics in the main series games, as you know. So the release of this Pokémon is not something we want to take lightly. We want to do justice to the things that make this Pokémon so special.

So trainers in Pokémon GO will have to wait a bit longer for a release. Furthermore, it is hoped that Kecleon will actually be implemented as a unique monster with special abilities in the game.
However, Niantic has not yet revealed when it will be ready. They have also kept rather tight-lipped about their plans for the future in the interview. Only a further expansion of AR was hinted at (via eurogamer.net).

What are the community reactions?
Many in the community are disappointed by the answers. Michael Sterenka was rather tight-lipped on many questions and revealed little. Especially regarding a possible release of Kecleon, many trainers were hoping for a more concrete answer.
For this reason, there is intense discussion in the community on reddit about the interview and criticism of Niantic’s answers (via reddit.com). Of course, Kecleon is also a major topic:

- glencurio: “Kecleon is not that special or unique. Meanwhile, unique Pokémon like Ninjatom get nothing.”
- PowerlinxJetfire: “I don’t think Ninjatom was disadvantaged, but they probably want to do something with it, like how you find invisible Kecleon in the main series. Special features would need to be added for that. Honestly, the negative response to the lackluster release of Ninjatom might be a reason they want to put a bit more effort into Kecleon.”
Trainer Vaelthune also writes what he thinks should have been said in the interview: “AR should be pushed forward until the end of time, as they see it as a pillar of GO (even though players don’t want it / say something else), because it will be better in ‘the future’; Kekleon has ‘unique attributes’ in the main series (abilities) and they are waiting to do justice to him.” (via reddit.com).
