How to pull and hold aggro in New World? We will show you everything you need to know about aggro in the game. This way, you can successfully tank or be a non-annoying teammate for your tanks.
What is aggro? In multiplayer games, aggro refers to the attention of an opponent. The one who has aggro is focused on and attacked by the corresponding mob. In a group, ideally, the tank should have the attention of the enemies and maintain aggro.
If you deal too much damage/healing or attack too early, you might steal aggro. With the taunt ability, a tank can regain focus from the opponent.
We show you in the overview how aggro works in New World.
Pulling, building, and holding aggro – How does it work in New World?
What the developers say: In the New World forum, Chardis, a developer of New World, explains how the target prioritization of enemies and the aggro system of the game works (via forums.newworld.com).
How do enemies select their targets? Most enemies in New World select their target based on threat (aggro). Threat is calculated from damage dealt to enemies, blocking enemy damage, healing done (to other players and also to yourself), and the taunt ability.
Enemies choose the player who is currently highest on the threat list as their target. This player then has aggro from that opponent.
You hold the aggro of an opponent until one of the following events occurs:
- Another player generates more aggro than you and climbs to the top of the threat list
- Another player uses the taunt ability
- The AI enemies use a special ability that targets players who currently have no aggro

Chardis explains these three scenarios in more detail:
- 1: Player A has 100 threat and therefore has the aggro of the opponent. Player B generates 110 threat and surpasses Player A. Now Player B has aggro from the opponent and the AI attacks Player B
- 2: Player A has 100 threat and Player B has 0 threat but then uses the taunt ability. This immediately pulls aggro from the opponent, who will then attack him as long as the taunt ability is active. After that, the opponent will attack the player who is highest on the threat list.
- 3: If Player A has 100 threat and Player B has 0, an opponent can still attack Player B. If it uses the ability “I throw my spear at the player who is farthest away”, then this ability ignores the threat list.
How does it work for healers and aggro? As Chardis explains, healing causes significantly less threat per ability than any other weapon. However, since you can also cast AoE heals and damage over time (HoTs) with the life staff, you can build threat this way as well.
If you heal your tank before he can deal damage to the opponent, then you have aggro as healer at first. In this case, your tank can taunt and build threat with damage to hold aggro.
