With Dysterra, a new survival MMO from Korea is coming to the West. It resembles a mix of Fallout 76 and the gunplay and world of Halo. There was a closed beta on Steam in 2021, and it will be reopened in May.
What kind of game is it? In Dysterra, you should gather resources and food, build a protective home, and generally fight for your survival. The game relies on a futuristic sci-fi setting:
- You explore a beautifully designed world from a first-person perspective.
- You are affected by radiation and temperature fluctuations. The biggest problem are the recurring “Terrafires,” which are caused by humans drilling down to the Earth’s core.
- Combat is primarily through firearms, which you can craft and improve. However, there will also be melee weapons, including an upgraded mech arm.
- You can find various vehicles in the world to get around.
- The focus is on PvE and collaboration between players, though there will also be PvP.
- The building system is heavily reminiscent of Fallout 76, as you should be able to improvise a lot. For example, you can build a grill out of scrap metal to cook meat from animals.
The game is being developed by Reality MagiQ, a Korean studio. It is being brought to the West by publisher Kakao Games (ArcheAge, Elyon).
When will Dysterra be released? The survival MMO will be available on Steam, although there is no specific release date yet. However, there will be an open beta in May that everyone can participate in.

What is this beta about? From May 4th to May 17th, all players who register on the official Steam page of Dysterra can participate in the beta.
There was already a beta for Dysterra in 2021, but only players with a key could participate. Now all players can join in the survival action.
What has changed since the last beta? A lot, says Kakao Games. The developers have revised the UI and the impact of attacks, as well as improved character animations in the game using their own motion capture.
Furthermore, there is an update in the main region of the map, which has been significantly revised compared to the first test.
