The new shooter Scavengers mixes battle royale and survival and launched on April 28 on Steam. However, there are already complaints about cheaters and hackers. Some even use a name change, making it difficult to report them properly.
What’s going on with Scavengers? The new shooter allows you to start in early access on Steam completely without a key since May 1. In Scavengers, you will be mixed with 59 other players and play against each other in teams of three. The goal is survival, and you will not only fight against other teams but also against the weather and PvE beasts.
In the first reviews, Scavengers is receiving mixed feedback:
- The Steam ratings are mixed at 54% (as of May 3 at 13:45 with 2,734 votes)
- On one hand, the game is praised for being different from other battle royales
- On the other hand, there is criticism for the poor loot, problematic cooperation with team members, and the technical state of the game
Another negative aspect is the fact that cheaters and hackers are already present in the game. They seem to have a huge arsenal of different cheating methods ready.
Aimbots, extra damage, and name changes
What kind of cheats are there in the game? In many games, it is hard to assess whether other players are really better or using cheats and hacks. Nevertheless, there are already many complaints about different cheats in Scavengers.
In a reddit thread, the user ThornyOtter shows an alleged cheater. They are said to be using an aimbot and can also see through walls to find their enemies:
In a thread, the user VN1X reports that a single squad eliminated almost the entire map solo in a match (via reddit).
On Steam, there are several reviews criticizing the presence of cheaters. The user Deadly2Die writes: “The servers lag all the time, I can’t even write. Not only that, but there are already cheaters after a short time.” (via Steam). Others also describe cheaters as a problem.
In a video by YouTuber UnRankeds Hub, you can see a player taking down an opponent who is supposedly wearing purple armor and should be able to take more hits.
How can you report cheaters? Through a spectator function, it is relatively easy to identify the names of users who cheat in Scavengers. You can report players directly in Scavengers, but also in a separate document from the developers (via Google Forms).
However, it is obvious that the cheat users have noticed this, and there is said to be a hack that makes reporting more difficult.
The user lickemlolies claims in a thread (via reddit) that with this hack, the name changes while spectating, even though you stay on a player permanently. So it’s better to look at the leaderboard instead of the spectator window.
Is anything being done against cheaters? Yes. In January the head of the game told us that they are working on various anti-cheat mechanics. However, these do not seem to always be effective.
What is Scavengers anyway? Scavengers is an interesting PvEvP shooter. Up to 60 players compete in teams of three against and with each other in rounds of about 30 minutes.
Scavengers combines elements from classic shooters, battle royale, survival games, and cooperative gameplay into a whole new type of game. While you do fight against other players, you cannot win a round alone.
MeinMMO author Benedict Grothaus already played the shooter before its launch on Steam and came to an interesting conclusion: Scavengers is the Fortnite for older folks – slow and more strategic.
