What is Dwarf Fortress? Dwarf Fortress actually came out in 2006 as an alpha version. Back then, the complex simulation could only be controlled in the form of ASCII code. In 2022, a Steam version was released, this time with graphics, because the developers needed money.
Basically, Dwarf Fortress is a world simulation. The great appeal of the game lies in the stories that can arise from the enormous freedom. A new mode on Steam now offers players a different perspective on the world: as an open-world role-playing game.

What does the new mode offer? Since April 2024, there has been the Adventure Mode
as a beta on Steam. The full version was released on January 23, 2025, as a major update. In Adventure Mode, the complex simulation becomes a classic sandbox role-playing game with several features.
- You can create and play your own character
- With the character, you can explore and travel through your simulated world
- There is a complex combat system that the developer himself describes (via YouTube), saying:
As if [the players] are experiencing a Dwarf Fortress combat log.
- The new update also includes a tutorial and a mode that gives you more assistance and instructions
- There are supposed to be quests where you can find dungeons and magical items
- You can recruit NPCs on your adventure who will join you on your journey
- The user interface has been improved
The special thing about Adventure Mode is that your simulation continues to run even while you play this mode. You can explore the world you built in Fortress Mode and have an influence on it. When you return from Adventure to Fortress Mode, you can see how your adventure has changed the world.
