Even during the early access phase, a small but exquisite MMORPG was able to earn very good ratings on Steam for many months. Now the final release was on the agenda.
Which MMORPG is it? Project: Gorgon was in early access on Steam for almost 8 years. Even during this time, Elder Game’s online role-playing game was among the best-rated representatives of the genre on Valve’s platform. Out of 2,599 reviews, 86 percent were positive. Only Guild Wars 2 and Star Wars: The Old Republic are rated better among MMORPGs on Steam.
Project Gorgon is “only” an indie MMORPG that aims to transport you back to the times of EverQuest 1 and Asheron’s Call. There are no predefined classes. You decide for yourself which skills you want to learn, combine, and master.
The combat system relies on classic tab-targeting. There is a strong focus on exploring and getting to know the world and its rules. If you are on fire, for example, due to a fire spell from an opponent, you can jump into a river to extinguish the flames.
You can even leave your mark on the world: Write a letter or a book to make a name for yourself as a poet or author. If you sell something to a merchant, they will then offer the items for sale to all other players.
A special MMORPG experience for the niche
How is Project: Gorgon received at launch? The low number of reviews shows the MMORPG’s biggest problem so far: it only appeals to a relatively small niche, causing the peak of concurrent players to have long been at only 653.
This has only changed now, with the final launch: A few hours ago, there were for the first time 903 players online at the same time. But still, that’s not much.
What should please the developers: A strong 92 percent of reviews from the past 30 days have been positive. Many players celebrate the old-school gaming experience that hits just the right buttons with genre fans.
- Gorgon Lamarque writes in his review on Steam: “It’s weird, it’s clunky and you can definitely see the low budget, but somehow it nails the MMO formula incredibly well. It won’t be for everyone – it’s quite complex and isn’t afraid to be grindy. But if that doesn’t deter you, it’s definitely worth a try!”
- Sionnach Rua adds on Steam: “If you were to create a modern version of a ‘Classic MMO’ from the era of AC, UO, and EQ, it would look exactly like this. A huge variety of skills to experiment with, tons of exploration, a lot of roaming and grinding – and no instancing whatsoever.”
- Limarch celebrates on Steam: “A wonderful old-school MMO, and it’s amazing that this was created by just a few people. There is so much to do in the game, and the community is extremely helpful. I can really only recommend it!”
In the few negative reviews, players mainly complain about weak performance and frame rate drops. Due to these technical weaknesses, the rather outdated graphics, and the old-school gaming experience, many recommend the free demo of the MMORPG.
The full version normally costs 24.50 Euros, but is available until February 4, 2026, at a 25 percent discount, so for 18.37 Euros.
