At G-Star 2019, Pear Abyss, the developer of Black Desert, presented the first images and information about their new MMORPG. Crimson Desert will be the official successor and the trailer looks strong.
What is Crimson Desert? Crimson Desert is a new MMORPG and the unofficial successor to Black Desert. Although the game is named after a region from BDO and was also intended as a successor, it has evolved in a different direction over time.
Pearl Abyss wants to make Crimson Desert the new flagship of the company. The focus is on multiple main characters, who will even have single-player campaigns. The character from the trailer is named Macduff and has a difficult past that she cannot shake off in the game.
The story is therefore much more in focus than it was in Black Desert.
Trailer shows a dark and brutal world
What does the trailer show? The first trailer, which was presented at G-Star 2019, provides a glimpse into the world of Crimson Desert, which appears very dark and brutal. Coinciding with this, the game also has the subtitle “A Saga Written in Blood”:
- Characters in the trailer speak of intense cold and starvation.
- Bandits, dragons, ogres, and other creatures can be seen.
- There are many dark scenes and brutal battles.
- Death plays a significant role in the trailer.
Much of this reminds one of the world of Game of Thrones. The main character also resembles Jon Snow from the series. This series was very successful, which can only benefit the setting of the MMORPG.
However, the trailer relies solely on cinematic content. We have not yet seen real gameplay from Crimson Desert. The trailer makes it seem more like Crimson Desert is a single-player RPG.
However, there should also be MMORPG content, such as an open world with other players, trading, and other elements one would expect from Pearl Abyss games.
When is Crimson Desert coming out? So far, there is no information on the development status of the MMORPG and when it will be released. Pearl Abyss is aiming for a beta for PC and consoles in 2020.
Since Crimson Desert is very likely the Project CD, we know it is also being developed for PS5 and the new Xbox and is supposed to have crossplay.
Furthermore, it will be created in a new, proprietary engine.
Crimson Desert is one of four new MMOs: Pearl Abyss is bringing an MMORPG with Crimson Desert, but is also planning three more new MMOs that were also presented at G-Star:
- DokeV will be a family-friendly MMORPG with colorful graphics.
- Plan 8 will be a shooter overseen by Counter-Strike creator Minh “Gooseman” Le.
- Shadow Arena will be a new battle royale in the style of Black Desert.
