On October 7th, the simulation SuperPower 3 was released on Steam. However, the new game from GolemLabs (The Guild 3) is not well-received there. The 679 reviews so far are 93% negative. The list of problems is quite long.
What kind of game is it? SuperPower 3 is the latest installment in the series and caused quite a stir with its announcement in 2021. After all, nearly 18 years have passed since the release of the second part in 2004. Many players were looking forward to a continuation and eagerly awaited it.
SuperPower 3 is said to place particular emphasis on realism, depth, and stunning graphics. You simulate the entire Earth with a total of 194 playable nations and make military, diplomatic, and economic decisions. In the end, you could theoretically rule the entire world, whether in single-player or multiplayer.
What is the problem? The launch on Steam went anything but smoothly. Players complain of technical and content issues. Many are disappointed because their expectations for the series have not been met in the slightest.
The game currently sits with only 7% positive reviews among the worst games on Steam. Among these games is eFootball, which was torn apart on Steam at the end of 2021.
“A game in alpha or at most in early access”
What are players criticizing?
- A proper introduction and a good tutorial are said to be missing.
- The gameplay is said to be contentless and dominated by sliders. It is also said to become slower the longer you stay in the game.
- The world is said to look beautiful but be quite empty, and nothing ever seems to happen.
- There are said to be many bugs and lags, even on powerful PCs.
- Some images and icons are said to simply be missing.
- The AI is said to be among the slowest and worst ever.
User Voltan also criticizes that “50% of the content from part 2 is missing” and that everything feels “simply empty.” CYKAbIYAT asks in his review whether the game is a “prank.” Overall, it particularly lacks depth, which was touted as a core feature for the game.
Our colleagues from GameStar were also not impressed with the game: I’ve never seen a strategy game like SuperPower 3 before.
Is there anything positive? Yes, the music, the trading system, and the world map itself receive praise. The character editor is said to be crafted with great care and extremely detailed.
But overall, nearly all players come to the conclusion that SuperPower 3 currently feels more like an alpha or in early access. A finished release version has to look different.
What are the player numbers like? On release day, a peak of 1,343 players played simultaneously on Steam. Just 24 hours later, the peak was only 265. By October 9th, only 121 players had logged in at the same time.
