The MMO Ragnarok Online should be familiar to many players. The game has now been released in many different versions and has expanded the Ragnarok universe widely. With Ragnarok Origin (Android/iOS), the classic comes now to your smartphone.
What is Ragnarok Online? The MMORPG Ragnarok Online is an MMO in pixel graphics, which is very much influenced by the anime style. The game was originally released on August 31, 2002.
Ragnarok can still captivate many players today and has been re-released several times in different versions. Among other things, it has already appeared as Ragnarok M: Eternal Love on smartphones.
This game was only a spin-off of the more well-known Ragnarok Online. Now, with Origin, a large part of the original is set to come to mobile, complete with prettier graphics and 18 classes in tow.
Already in 2019, Gravity, the developer studio behind the series, announced several new Ragnarok games for 2021. What was then still an unnamed Project S has now become Ragnarok Origin.
What does Ragnarok Origin offer? Origin is set to be a new take on the old Ragnarok Online, an MMORPG in anime style, but this time for mobile. Ragnarok will be available for both iOS and Android.
Ragnarok Origin therefore offers all the core content you expect from a mobile MMORPG, including the following:
- 6 classes each with 3 distinct subclasses
- Four cities and areas
- Dynamic weather as well as day-night cycles
- A story that revolves around the origin of the world of Ragnarok
- PvE and PvP content
- Basically Free2Play, but offers cash shop content
When can you play it? Ragnarok Origin is already running in Korea and will be released on November 8 in North America. European players still have to be patient, as an official release date for Germany has not yet been set.
It is also not confirmed whether Origin will come to us at all. However, this is very likely, as a large part of the other Ragnarok games is also available here. Furthermore, you can already pre-register for the game in the German Play Store.

The community is split
What do the fans say? The community is rather divided regarding news about Origin. Many believe that there are too many games in the Ragnarok universe and that no one needs a new one anymore.
Others, on the other hand, are excited about the game and are convinced that a good adaptation of Ragnarok is finally coming to mobile. However, everyone agrees that there are concerns regarding potential pay-to-win factors.
Since the game does not yet have a release in the West, we cannot say anything about it so far. However, the community strongly suspects that pay-to-win will take place.
This is what the community is saying: On reddit and in the comments on YouTube, the game is already being discussed by its community. We summarize some of the comments for you:
- The user IDGAFunk writes (via YouTube): “Oh man, the nostalgia is totally getting to me. I really can’t wait!”
- The user Aschi Salleh is pleasantly surprised and writes (via YouTube): “Oh wow, this actually looks like it could be fun.”
- More disappointed is Zack Fair (via YouTube): “Another Ragnarok Online? Really? I already stopped playing Land of ROM, so basically the first Origin.. I am not impressed.”
What do you think of the announcement? Are you excited about a Ragnarok Online in better graphics for mobile? Or does the whole setting leave you cold? Do you perhaps also fear that pay-to-win mechanics will be implemented in the smartphone MMORPG? Feel free to let us know in the comments here on MeinMMO.
Ragnarok Online 2 was a continuation for PC, but it was already shut down in 2019.
