On July 19, the game MultiVersus launched into Open Beta on Steam. In this game, various people and creatures owned by Warner Bros. battle against each other. At peak, over 60,000 players were online simultaneously, and the first reviews are very positive.
What kind of game is this? MultiVersus is a platform fighting game and loosely resembles successful titles like Super Smash Bros. or Tekken. The quirky part: You play against each other with the craziest characters. Among the options are:
- Bugs Bunny
- Shaggy from Scooby-Doo
- Batman
- Harley Quinn
- Tom and Jerry as a duo
- LeBron James, the basketball player
- Arya Stark
Each of these characters has unique abilities that can also be combined with other characters. Furthermore, there are three perks that can be adjusted before the fight, adding more tactics.
You can play in co-op, 2v2, or directly in a 1v1. There’s also a free-for-all mode that accommodates 4 players. In addition to online multiplayer, there is also a single-player mode.
When will the game be released? The game is currently in Early Access for the Open Beta. The official Open Beta is set to take place on July 26. To gain early access, you need to pay 40 euros. However, the final game is expected to be Free2Play.
In addition to Steam, MultiVersus is also available for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. You can get a glimpse of the gameplay in this trailer:
MultiVersus has more players than the top 10 fighting games on Steam combined
How is MultiVersus performing? Very well. In the last 24 hours, there were over 49,000 players online at peak, and on July 21, there was even an all-time high of 61,964 (via SteamCharts). Thus, the game had more peak players in the last 24 hours than the 10 largest fighting games on Steam combined:
- Brawhalla had 17,298 players
- Tekken 7 had 6,428 players
- DNF Duel had 2,766 players
- Street Fighter 5 had 3,108 players
- Mortal Kombat 11 had 2,582 players
- Dragon Ball FighterZ had 1,930 players
- Guilty Gear Strive had 1,921 players
- King of Fighters 15 had 813 players
- Rivals of Aether had 618 players
- Granblue Fantasy: Versus had 180 players
What do the reviews say? The reviews praise the game as well. Out of 1,001 reviews, 93% are positive. They particularly commend:
- The generally good gameplay.
- The crazy characters that can also be tested beforehand in a mode.
- The many new characters that have already been implemented.
- The fact that it is expected to be completely Free2Play in the future.
This makes MultiVersus a serious competitor to Smash Bros. for many, which costs money and can only be played on Nintendo consoles.
Some doubts still exist regarding the shop and balance. The shop is not implemented in the beta yet. According to some users, there are characters that are far too strong and need to be adjusted.
