In Pokémon GO, a new discovery suggests the return of the strong Proto-evolutions. We at MeinMMO will show you what it’s about and how the trainers feel about it.
What are the Protos? The Proto-evolutions are the original forms of the legendary Pokémon Groudon and Kyogre. Similar to a Mega Evolution, this can be temporarily activated through corresponding Proto-energy, making the two monsters the strongest of their kind.
After Proto-Groudon and Proto-Kyogre were first found in the game during the Hoenn tour, a new event find could soon mean the return of the legendary Pokémon. We explain why.
This is indicated by the new event find
What was found? As the PokeMiners, a group of data miners, revealed via their Twitter account, new texts related to an event and avatar items for Team Magma were discovered in the game code. The special thing about it is that they belong to another find that was made back in January 2019.
This is what they wrote (via twitter.com): “The date was January 16, 2019. Team Magma clothing was added to the game. There were no texts then. Now, over 4 years later. The day that u/-Nintendo has been waiting for on Reddit. They. have. TEXTS! Grandmothers from Singapore can be happy. About ‘A Little Warm Up’ event.”
What trainers suspect: After Niantic took over 4 years to add the texts, many players suspect a soon release of the “A Little Warm Up” event. Especially the return of the strong Proto-Pokémon is conceivable for a large part of the Reddit community and is already generating considerable anticipation.
Additionally, they can also imagine a possible release of Mega-Rayquaza in this context. Comments like the following can be read (via reddit.com):
- Havocreator7: “Return of Proto-Groudon/Kyogre?”
- ZekromFPS: “Maybe this summer with a possible Mega-Rayquaza debut, probably in connection with the GO Fest 2023 or something similar.”
- Mechlift: “With all the controversies Niantic is going through, they could just bring a Mega-Rayquaza! Your ace in the hole.”
- QuestionsOverAnswers: “I’m pretty sure that adding Teams Magma and Aqua is a sign that we will soon get Crypto-Groudon or Crypto-Kyogre.
The real question is, what will come first; Crypto-Raids or a Team Magma takeover?”
Reasons for a return of the Proto-evolutions
Team Magma & Team Aqua: The two teams are two criminal organizations from the anime and the main Pokémon games. Similar to Team Rocket, they cause trouble there.
Team Magma wants to bring the legendary Pokémon Groudon under its control to gain power over land masses and to expand them in this way. Team Aqua, on the other hand, aims for Kyogre and the dominion over the world’s oceans. In doing so, both teams attempt to awaken the respective Proto-types.
Due to the embedded avatar items for Team Magma in the game code and the fact that Proto-Groudon and Proto-Kyogre play a central role for both teams, a return of the Protos for the event is quite conceivable.
But a kind of Rocket takeover with new Crypto-Pokémon would also be possible. In this context, the recently found Crypto-Raids could play a role and give trainers a completely new access to Crypto-Pokémon.
Note from Professor Willow: However, Professor Willow provides another point that supports a return of the Protos. During the Hoenn tour in February, trainers could participate in the special research “Legend Hunt”. This focused on the Proto-Pokémon. Many players hoped for a surprise release of Mega-Rayquaza, as this monster would have perfectly fit into the story of the two Pokémon.
Historically, Rayquaza was the first to use a Mega Evolution to end the battle between Proto-Groudon and Proto-Kyogre. Although Mega-Rayquaza ultimately did not play a role during the Hoenn tour, at the end of the quest, there was a small hint by Professor Willow that indicated the Mega Evolution.
This was not the first time that Willow announced upcoming content in this way, which is why many players have since been hoping for a soon release. In this context, a return of the Protos would also be conceivable.
Counterarguments: Some players are not so sure about the return of the Proto-evolutions and a possible release of Mega-Rayquaza in connection with the event. If you look closely at the found texts, the tasks do not seem very demanding.
This could mean that it is aimed at players who haven’t been active for a long time. Other trainers alternatively imagine that it is about an event to help Candela with her research, as is currently the case with the “A Wise Hero” event with Blanche. For this reason, you can find comments like the following (reddit.com):
- jmledesma: “All texts are aimed at new or returning players. That makes sense, as they have no problem wiping out their existing player base.”
- aznknight613: “When reading the quest dialogues for “A Little Warm Up”, it sounds like it’s meant to be something to do for Candela.”
As with all leaks, a certain skepticism is always warranted. The PokeMiners have certainly proven their accuracy with their predictions in the past, however, these finds are not official information. For this reason, Niantic could make changes to them at any time.
Whether the Proto-Pokémon will actually return to the game in this event and accompanied by Mega-Rayquaza or if other content awaits you remains to be seen for now. If there is new information, you will find out here at MeinMMO.
What do you think about the finds? Would you also like to see the Proto-Raids return? Or do you think Niantic has something else planned for the event? Let us know in the comments.
The trainers are speculating at the GO Fest about another powerful Pokémon that was showcased 2 years ago. We will show you which one it is.
