Dungeons of the Amber Griffin is set to release in 2023 as a new dungeon crawler inspired by classic cult titles from the 90s. The focus is on mysterious ghosts and monsters based on ancient Polish legends. The game is currently available as a demo.
What kind of game is it exactly? In Dungeons of the Amber Griffin, you play as four characters simultaneously, representing the classes Warrior, Rogue, Priest, and Mage. With these Daredevils, you explore dungeons, collect loot, and learn new abilities over time.
You control one Daredevil through the world, with all other characters moving in the same place, a mechanic also referred to as “Blobber” or “Gridder.” This mechanic was often used in the past and is also used in the MMORPG Broken Ranks. The combat system is turn-based, and you enter a customized combat screen when you encounter an enemy.
However, the special twist lies in the game world. It has been created in collaboration with the Museum of Kashubian and Pomeranian Literature and Music in Wejherowo. It is based on real locations and legends from the Polish region of Kashubia, where demons play a significant role, which is why the game also offers some horror elements.
Various Game Modes, a “Music Journey” and Only One Developer
What modes does the game offer? At launch, you can choose from 4 different modes:
- The Story Mode, where you venture with the four characters and experience the story of the world.
- The Music Journey, where you complete specific levels created to fit the folklore of the region.
- The Puzzles, where you need to solve riddles.
- The Speedrunning, which is mainly about completing challenges quickly.
In all modes, you should be able to earn items that can also help you in the other challenges.
Who is behind the game? Tomasz Rożyński founded the studio Frozengem and is currently the only employee. He is developing Dungeons of the Amber Griffin entirely on his own.
In an interview with PCGamer, he revealed that he has animations and designs created partly by illustrators and partly by the MidJourney AI. This has proven to be very helpful for a single developer.
Rożyński is developing the entire game in Unreal Engine 4, with the option to switch to Unreal Engine 5 later.
Can you already try the game? Yes, there is currently a playable demo (via Steam). In this demo, you can expect over 20 different monsters, an initial skill system, and over 500 items.
