Throne and Liberty (TL) is the new MMORPG from NCSoft that has been in development since 2011. It is set to be released in 2022 for PC, PlayStation, and Xbox and looks really good in the new trailer. We reveal what the game is all about.
What kind of game is it? TL was originally announced as Lineage 3 or Lineage Eternal. However, it was completely overhauled in 2017 to become a “true next-gen MMORPG.” New gameplay trailers and new information about the game have been shared:
- The game world is supposed to be completely open.
- The story of the game is in focus.
- You play in third person and not in the isometric perspective as originally planned.
- There will be various means of transportation, including grappling hooks and transforming into flying or aquatic creatures.
- The environment will play an important role. Much depends on day, night, or the weather.
- You will frequently encounter massive world bosses.
- Sieges of castles play an important role.
Currently, some details about the game are still missing, such as whether there will be classes or what the PvE and PvP content will look like overall. However, the developers have outlined their fundamental ideas for the game in a detailed article.

Story and the immersive world with weather influences play an important role
What do the developers highlight about TL? In a blog post on the Korean website, the developers shared some details about Throne and Liberty. At its core, the game revolves around a story and an immersive world that players are meant to dive deeply into.
The world operates completely without loading screens and offers plenty of verticality. To make movement enjoyable, the developers have implemented grappling hooks that players can use to pull themselves up.
Another highlight is said to be the animal forms. This allows players to traverse land, water, and air.
Also interesting are the environmental influences in the game. The world is supposed to feel alive, which is why it changes with the day/night cycle and the weather. Shots with the bow are, for example, dependent on the wind. Lightning magic, on the other hand, is enhanced in the rain, while fire magic benefits from sunshine.
Additionally, pathways are supposed to depend on the weather. In the rain, you should be unable to use sewer canals because they become flooded.
During a siege of the castle, the weather will play a role. However, players will also be able to influence the weather to summon a solar eclipse or a thunderstorm.
What game content does TL offer? In the trailer, we see massive boss battles with dozens of players, as well as large castle sieges. These are also expected to be the core content of Throne and Liberty. What other content will be in this MMORPG is currently unknown, although the trailer starts with battles of a player against mobs.
TL has been in development forever, set to finally release in 2022
What is the development history? Originally, TL was announced as Lineage Eternal and thus as the successor to the successful MMORPG series from Korea. However, due to poor feedback in early tests, the game underwent a complete overhaul. Particularly, the entry and the heavy grind were criticized.
The new version now features action-packed battles, massive bosses, and sieges. It is said to have been in internal testing since late 2020.
When will the game be released? Throne and Liberty is said to be released worldwide in 2022. There is no exact release date. The MMORPG is set to be available for PC and consoles. A mobile version is not a topic for NCSoft, as they claim to have released enough games in recent years.
The specifics of beta tests in the West or Korea are currently unknown. The monetization has also not yet been revealed.
How much did NCSoft spend on the new MMORPG? TL has been in development since 2011, nearly 10 years. And this time is said to have cost a significant amount. Over 100 billion Won (approximately 74.52 million Euros) is said to have already been consumed by the MMORPG. Therefore, it is likely very important for NCSoft that Throne and Liberty becomes a success.
