Scrubs is back with a new season, and it’s already off to a great start with episode 1. However, MeinMMO editor Nikolas Hernes cannot forgive the creators for ruining one of the best moments of season 8.
The revival of Scrubs has finally launched in Germany on Disney+ and episode 1 feels like coming home. Even though many years have passed, not much seems to have changed at Sacred Heart. The hospital is still alive, the jokes and the dynamics of the characters are just like before, albeit with modern twists, but without losing the spirit of the original.
In short: Even the first episode is really good. Actually.
Because there’s one decision from the first episode that I cannot forgive, even though it shouldn’t bother me. But it ruins one of the best moments of season 8 for me.
Season 8 was the perfect conclusion, but one decision tarnishes it
Warning: There is a spoiler from the first episode of the new Scrubs season.
I’m actually quite satisfied with episode 1 of the new Scrubs season. But when I found out that J.D. and Elliot are no longer married, it really bothered me. I usually don’t care much about couples and shipping in series. I never took it too seriously. That’s why I was so surprised that it bothers me so much in Scrubs.
Season 8 of Scrubs is one of the most beautiful series finales I can remember. Nothing represents that better than J.D.’s final scene in episode 19 of season 8. The song Book of Love
by Peter Gabriel plays, and J.D. sees his future with his friends, children, and Elliot on a screen.
I’m not usually a fan of such romantic, cheesy scenes, but this one hits me every time. It’s the beautiful happy ending for all the characters I’ve come to love over the years. Even I shed a tear at that moment. It’s simply one of the best episodes of Scrubs.
And that’s exactly why the current conflict with J.D. and Elliot bothers me. Sure, even people who fit perfectly together can separate, but here it feels like a forced plot point to create some drama.
The revival doesn’t need that at all
What bothers me most about this decision is that the revival doesn’t need that at all. It’s important that there’s character development, and the first episode already shows with Turk and Dr. Cox that things have changed, despite the same atmosphere as before.
Especially Turk’s mood has a lot of potential for a strong story, and the conflict between J.D. and Elliot doesn’t fit in very well; it feels like a regression for both of them. Sure, I don’t know yet how things will progress between the two, but their scenes were the weakest of the episode.
And if it should come to a reconciliation and them getting back together, it will only confuse me more. The finale of season 8 never claims that it will turn out that way, but in my mind, it was always the guaranteed future for the doctors.
The Scrubs revival already shows with episode 1 how much potential and fun there is in returning to Sacred Heart. That’s why it’s incredibly unfortunate that one of the best moments is being revised, especially when it wasn’t necessary.
What do you think? Have you seen the episode yet, and what do you think of the separation of J.D. and Elliot? Feel free to let us know in the comments. However, I will of course continue watching because I really like all the other aspects.
