Playing games like Project Cars 2, with the vibrations on the steering wheel and a clutch. It always puts a broad smile on my face.
But what about my 3 points against the purchase?
- I had to accept the nearly 250 € for the purchase – I also didn’t want to hold anything “cheap”
- Attaching and detaching at the desk is much easier than I remember from my old steering wheel
- I am now confident that my gaming experience has improved so much that it justifies the price
With the new steering wheel, I currently mainly play Bus Simulator 2018 and have already had to put up with many remarks. But since as a bus driver, I also take on a form of a racing driver and bring my passengers swiftly from A to B, I can only laugh at the remarks.
If anyone wants to watch me drive with the new steering wheel, feel free to grab a free ticket and please sit in the back. Don’t stand by the doors!

After years with the controller, I finally bought a steering wheel and pedals for my gaming PC and Xbox. I use it to play simulations like Bus Simulator, but also racing games like Project Cars 2.
I’ve had my gaming racing wheel for about three weeks now. And that, although I’ve loved and played racing games and simulators for many years. I hadn’t owned a steering wheel for my games for at least 15 years. I always thought it wasn’t worth it. “And then there’s the constant packing away when you finish the game.”
But I took the plunge and decided on the Logitech G920 after my research. Moving away from the controller, I went for the steering wheel + pedals. And what can I say? I love it. Let me tell you why the purchase was worth it for me and why I could throw my initial concerns overboard.
Why was the purchase so important?
This was the situation I was in: On my PlayStation 2, I played a lot of Gran Turismo 2 back in the day. For that, I invested my saved money and bought a steering wheel + pedals. It opened the door to a completely different world for me – before that, I couldn’t steer racing cars as precisely with my analog sticks.
But instead of later buying a PS3, I switched to PC. I played racing games there first with a keyboard, and eventually with a controller. Unfortunately, I couldn’t connect the old Thrustmaster setup from my PS2 to my PC, so it has been collecting dust by itself ever since.
My love for racing games remained. Need for Speed, GTA, Dirt – all sorts. Eventually, it expanded to simulators and as realistic games as RaceRoom Racing Experience. Today, I play GTA 5, Euro Truck Simulator 2, Bus Simulator 2018, and Project Cars 2.
That was the hurdle: I hadn’t bought a steering wheel for the PC all these years because
- the good devices are quite expensive
- they take up a lot of space on the desk and have to be put away again (inconvenient!)
- I wasn’t sure if playing would actually improve so much that it justified a purchase
I often had Logitech or Thrustmaster products in my online shopping cart and thought: “Okay, it’s time.” But the points mentioned always kept me from buying in the end.
Then I bought a steering wheel: Upon closer consideration, I summarized what would speak for a purchase. My weekly gaming hours in ETS and Project Cars 2 were a significant factor. Plus, I was already eyeing Bus Simulator 2018, which my colleague Florian Franck made appealing (here you can listen to him philosophizing about bus simulators via (YouTube.com).
Now, everything spoke in favor of a purchase. I wanted to at least give it a try. If it’s not for me, it can always be returned or resold. Let’s Go!
Which gaming steering wheel did I buy? Before I buy hardware, I first read up on the topic and decide beforehand where I want to land. It was clear to me: It can cost a bit of money, but I don’t need a professional part for more than 400 €. It should look “nice” and preferably also be usable on my Xbox.
After much back and forth, I finally decided on the Logitech G920. Initially, however, without a gear stick, as the paddles on the steering wheel are sufficient for me for now (and the set was not in stock at my trusted dealer).

If you’re interested now, you should wait a little longer. Because on June 21 and 22, the Amazon Prime Day is coming up. Many offers in the gaming sector are expected. We don’t know exactly what will be on offer yet. But there’s a chance that you might get the Logitech G920 cheaper then.
Conclusion: I should have bought the gaming steering wheel earlier!
After just three weeks of use, I can say that the purchase was worth it for me. Especially because my gaming experience in my favorite games has drastically improved. I was aware that there is a different driving experience between controller and steering wheel + pedals. What I wasn’t clear about was how much that would affect my enjoyment.
I now play my favorite racing games much more often, can steer much more precisely in corners, and have a better feel for using the gas, brake, and clutch in video games.
For me, the purchase was so important because I now get to know the games I play passionately from a different, better side. That overshadows the setup and teardown and the purchase price for me. The fact that I can now play my favorite games with even more enjoyment justifies for me the title “most important purchase.”
I immediately noticed that GTA Online is absolutely not made for it. Or it requires a lot of getting used to, being driven with a steering wheel. It’s probably a mix of both, but I’d rather stick with the tried and tested controller for now.
