Because you need to get kills with them to unlock certain weapon camos. Without them, you can’t access the rarest and most coveted weapon camos in Modern Warfare.
And this feature is also quite useful in-game. However, what this term actually means is not immediately obvious and leaves many players puzzled. But not for long.

What exactly are mounted weapons in Modern Warfare?
This is what lies behind the term “Mounted Weapons”: What are mounted weapons, anyway? Many players initially suspected
- the stationary shield turret
- weapons with a bipod
- optional weapon attachments for regular weapons such as under-barrel shotguns or grenade launchers
- or even the weapon of the helicopter gunner killstreaks
But the explanation is much simpler than you think. The misunderstandings and misinterpretations are actually based on an unfortunate translation of the English term “mounted weapons”.
It actually simply refers to the new feature “Weapons Rest”. With this new mechanic, all weapons from Modern Warfare, such as the powerful assault rifle M4A1, can be braced against edges, corners, door frames, and various other surfaces.
This position is called mounted in English – hence the term “Mounted Weapons” in this case.
So, in short, mounted weapons are the regular weapons in Modern Warfare that are not actually mounted but simply placed, leaned against, or supported on various surfaces.

How to use mounted weapons in Modern Warfare
Lean to the side and rest weapons – This is how the “Mounted Weapons” mechanic works in the game: The mechanic is basically quite simple.
If you are standing at a house corner, at a door, or in front of a table, you can brace your weapon
- against the door frame
- on the wall
- on a table
- on a box
- on a car hood
- on a barrel
- on a railing
- or another suitable surface
by pressing the corresponding button.
Your character will lean slightly out or look flat over the corresponding surface but will mostly remain hidden behind the cover used for leaning.
However, you can still swing your weapon within a generous range – so the view is not stiff or heavily restricted. You cannot move, though.
The settings you have: By default, this feature is triggered by pressing and holding the aim-down-sights button and then pressing the right stick (gamepad) or the Y key (keyboard) when you are next to a suitable surface to rest on.
To deactivate the weapon rest, simply move in any direction (pressing and holding the left stick or direction key a little longer) or release the aim-down-sights button – just controlling your view does not interrupt the rest.
You can, however, configure the weapon rest trigger or exit in the game options differently.
The corresponding settings depend heavily on individual preferences. You can find them in the options menu under the Controller/Weapons section.
There you can select and activate your preferred settings for
- Weapon Rest Activation
- and Weapon Rest Exit Movement
and enable your preferred settings.
This is why you need mounted weapons in Modern Warfare
This is how mounted weapons affect gameplay: The weapon rest feature or the bracing of weapons is, after a little adjustment, a sensible addition for any cautious or restrained playstyle and a crucial gameplay element.
On the one hand, the character leans out slightly but mostly remains hidden behind the cover used. This provides less exposure to enemies than a regular peek around the corner or over an obstacle.
Moreover, mounted weapons have another significant advantage. While you cannot move during this, the recoil of the weapon used is greatly reduced. The aim-down-sights view also doesn’t sway as much as when holding the weapon freely. This makes the weapon rest quite recommended for holding tight corridors or key positions.
For players who prefer to move quickly and go all-in on Run&Gun, using a weapon rest is only situationally worthwhile, if at all.
Unlocking topographic weapon camos with mounted weapons in Modern Warfare: The reason many players look for mounted weapons likely pertains to the weapon camos, the so-called Weapon Camos.
To unlock the rarest weapon skins Gold, Platinum, and Damascus in Modern Warfare, you need to get kills with mounted weapons, among other requirements. This is the only way to unlock topographic weapon camos in Modern Warfare.
If you want to unlock all camos in this camouflage category, you must achieve 100 kills with mounted weapons in Modern Warfare.
Modern Warfare – How to get kills with mounted weapons easily: If you want to quickly gather kills with mounted weapons in Modern Warfare, it is relatively easy if you keep a few tips in mind:
- Play carefully and cautiously (Yes, you practically have to camp).
- Look for high-traffic key points on a map, position yourself with a good view slightly away from them, and take out your opponents from there.
- You can also place the field upgrade “Mobile Cover” practically everywhere in good positions and use this shield as cover to brace your weapons.
- It’s worth visiting the Hardcore mode because weapons kill faster there, and with a little adjustment (if necessary), it’s easier to get your kills, provided you find a good position.
- The best maps with good positions and sightlines are Gun Runner, Hackney Yard, Piccadilly, and St. Petrograd. Also, Shoot House is a good choice, especially due to the 24/7 mode.
