Monster Hunter World: Iceborne received its second major update for PS4 and Xbox One last night. With Patch 12.01, a new region, new monsters, including for the Guiding Lands, come. Additionally, new equipment and much more. We take a look at the patch notes and show you the 5 highlights: 3 new monsters, a new area, and a weapon tree.
Monster Hunter World: Iceborne is the first major expansion of the game for PS4 and Xbox One. While PC players have to wait a few more weeks until Iceborne starts, Patch 12.01 has gone live for consoles today.
The huge DLC has a lot to offer and brings several new content for players. We have compiled some highlights for you.
How big is the update? The download of the new patch is between 2.1 GB for PS4 and 2.8 GB for Xbox One.
Defeat new monsters again
These monsters are brand new in Iceborne: With the patch, you are faced with two new opponents. One is the Hell Zinogre, a dangerous subspecies of the Thunder monster.
The new version of Zinogre now has “Dragon” as its element instead of “Thunder”. It attacks you with its bugs as projectiles.
To fight it, you need to have completed the story of Iceborne. Additionally, you need to have the volcanic biome in your Guiding Lands. If you meet these requirements, you can accept the quest for the Hell Zinogre.
Furthermore, the identity of the secret monster has been clarified. As the second new opponent, the adult form of an old acquaintance comes to Iceborne with the patch.
The talk is about the last monster of the base game named “Xeno’jiiva”. The new dragon is still listed as unknown in the game. However, its name “Safi’jiiva” is already known. The monster can now be fought through a quest, but cannot be killed.

The monster is now hardened: With the new subspecies of Zinogre and “Safi’jiiva”, the fun doesn’t end. A new hardened version of the Ruin Nergigante has also been announced. So pack in resistance or items against bleeding and dodge as much as you can.
For the hardened Ruin Nergigante, you need an area of your Guiding Lands at level 7. There you get the chance to encounter the beast. A guaranteed encounter with the hardened version, however, only offers you the new region in the Guiding Lands.
A new area comes
This is the new area of the Guiding Lands: With Patch 12.01, a new region is also introduced. There is now a frosty area on your endgame map. Here you will also find the remaining monsters from the Frostfang area:
- Barioth
- Viper-Tobi-Kadachi
- Beotodus
Patch 12.01 brings a new weapon tree and more
These are the new weapons: To make it easier for players, a new weapon tree has been introduced. With these defender weapons, you should easily and quickly get through the base game.
In addition to the Guardian armor, which has been available for a while, this should provide players faster access to the Iceborne content. You can build a defender weapon for each of the 14 weapon types. Just visit your blacksmith for that.
What has been improved in the Guiding Lands: In the endgame of Iceborne, the Guiding Lands are at the center. There you can and must increase your biome levels. It can happen that other biomes decrease.
For this, there has been a lock since the last patch. You can determine your biome levels this way. You can now directly turn this lock on and off in your Guiding Lands. So you can now flexibly defeat monsters and determine and solve your biomes in real-time.
This is how updates will continue:
- From December 13: The crossover to “Horizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds” will be continued for PS4.
- From December 20: The “Astera Fest” and the “Seliana Holiday Joy Fest” begin.
- From December 27: The final round of the crossover with “Horizon Zero Dawn” begins.
- From January 24: The second major birthday festival is coming. Then it will be quite spaced out in Astera and Selina.
