Dragons are a popular genre standard in fantasy games. Like orcs, dwarves, elves, and medieval settings, the scaled giant beasts with fire breath are hard to imagine absent from a fantasy epic.
There is hardly a fantasy MMO (RPG) in which some kind of dragon does not appear at some point. Often as particularly impressive raid bosses or antagonists.

Here, dragons are more than just raid bosses!

Guild Wars 2 – “Leave the dragon alone”
This is what it’s about: In Guild Wars 2, everything revolves around dragons. But not just any scaled beasts, but colossal ancient beings known as Elder Dragons. They have a very special role in the game and have been the focal point of the story since the beginning of Guild Wars 2.
What role do dragons play in Guild Wars 2?
The ancient dragons have lived on the world of Tyria for eons and spend their lives in cycles. When they awaken, they consume the magic of the world and cause world-changing devastation. Entire civilizations perish in the process.
When the dragons are satiated, they go back to sleep and continuously give off magic. The world recovers and is reborn from the rubble and ruins. Dragons in Guild Wars 2 are thus a primal force of destruction and renewal.
How do dragons affect gameplay?
Guild Wars 2 takes place at a time when the ancient dragons are awakening. The world you know is thus threatened with destruction! But the peoples of Tyria refuse to give in without a fight, so you form an alliance of various peoples in the base game to defeat the undead dragon Zhaitan.
However, afterwards, the even more powerful plant dragon Mordremoth awakens, who in the Heart of Thorns add-on first destroys the anti-dragon pact and then is defeated in a truly epic battle. The dragon fight takes place across an entire map, the beast was that large!
Killing dragons is wrong!
What happens when you kill dragons? Those who sharpen their blade to slaughter the remaining Elder Dragons Primordus, Jormag, Kralkatorrik, and an unknown sea dragon after the death of Mordremoth will be disappointed in the 3rd season of the Guild Wars story.
Because whenever a dragon dies, its power passes on to the remaining beasts, making them even stronger. Moreover, every dead dragon damages the world significantly.
Should any of the ancient beings perish, it could weaken the fabric of magic in Tyria to such an extent that the world could completely fall apart.
No dragons, no Guild Wars 2
This is what happened after Path of Fire: Unfortunately, a dragon is now more active than ever. Kralkatorrik has consumed the essence of a corporeal god after the last add-on Path of Fire and is now opening portals all over the world to unleash his minions upon us.
However, luckily in the Living World Season 4, we again achieve victory over Kralkatorrik. In his dying moments, he reveals to us that the Elder Dragons are tormented by magic.
Suddenly, the dragons are seen in a whole different light. Are they not the evil, nasty creatures, but perhaps we should rather have sympathy for them?
Moreover, our baby dragon Aurene has also ascended to become an Elder Dragon. What will change in our relationship with her? Perhaps the future season will clarify this, which will be announced on August 30.
