The MMORPG MapleStory 2 seemed to be developing into a hit in 2018, but now it is facing shutdown. The servers are closing.
How well did MapleStory 2 launch? The MMORPG was released in October 2018 and achieved a peak of 42,278 concurrent players on Steam immediately. Even the reviews remain mostly positive with 74%. The MMORPG was well-received but primarily struggled with gold sellers and cheaters. Additionally, there was a lot of grinding.

What are the developers announcing now? MapleStory 2 will shut down on May 27. It is no longer possible to make purchases in the in-game shop.
We are forever grateful for your patience and dedication regarding MapleStory 2 as we tried to revamp the game starting with Project New Leaf. Ultimately, however, we have decided that we will not be able to provide the kind of service that meets your expectations.
We have closely examined the current state of the game and its future roadmap and, unfortunately, have come to the conclusion that it will be difficult to continue the game in the long term while staying true to what made MapleStory 2 your MapleStory 2.

Why is the game being shut down? Despite the strong launch of this anime MMORPG in October 2018, Steamcharts show a steady decline in players. Over all this time, there was only an increase in two months when new, larger updates were released.
Players mention several reasons for this:
- The grind was simply too high. The random element of obtaining good items and resources while playing led to a strongly repetitive gameplay. As a result, MapleStory 2 got pretty boring rather quickly.
- The developers simply could not manage the problem with gold sellers and cheaters, which negatively affected the fun of the game.
- The player-created costumes were problematic, as their design was hardly checked. Some players walked around in Hitler costumes even though many minors played MapleStory 2.
MapleStory-2 fans are sad
How are players reacting to the shutdown? MapleStory 2 still has very good ratings on Steam. Therefore, fans are expressing their incomprehension about the decision.
- DarkNicky explains on Steam: “Holy s… They are shutting it down! I love this game. Why is it closing? I mean, I didn’t like how they split the U.S. into East and West… maybe a mega server would have prevented the downfall! I’m very sad. Will there maybe be a MapleStory 3 now?”
- Asunai is angry: “The developers decided to abruptly end the service and grant refunds to anyone who purchased through the Nexon website, but not through Steam. I don’t even know why the game is being shut down; it seems to have a decent player base.”
- Arashi is sad: “I loved this game and will miss it. It was such a unique MMO and despite its flaws, I had a lot of fun playing. Definitely a game I will remember. Thank you for the great game!”
