The MMORPG RuneScape celebrated its release on iOS and Android on June 17, 2021. What does the mobile version of the classic offer?
This is RuneScape: RuneScape is a true cornerstone of MMORPGs and was originally released in 2021 for PC. It has since been revised multiple times, but still features a vast fantasy world called Gielinor that you navigate through. There, you explore dungeons together and upgrade your equipment. A strong emphasis is placed on interaction with other players.
It was only in October 2020 that RuneScape was also released on Steam. Today, it stands among the highest-rated MMORPGs on that platform despite its age. An Old School variant of RuneScape has also been released, which was already available on iOS and Android.
Now the new mobile version of the complete MMORPG RuneScape follows. It was released for iOS and Android on June 17.
RuneScape Mobile – What’s inside and who is it for?
This is what the mobile version offers: The new version of RuneScape is a complete variant of the original game that you can play on your smartphone. All content available in the PC version should also be present on iOS and Android. The entire game world is included, you can master all the skills of the original and challenge bosses.
In RuneScape, you can explore the open world and improve yourself in a progression system without fixed classes. For example, you have the opportunity to embark on adventures where you stop cultists or visit a monastery.
Or you can take on the fight with a troll horde that has occupied a mine. Alternatively, you can dive into the crafting and trading of items.

Is there crossplay? Yes, crossplay is supported. This means: If you play on your phone, you can also encounter PC players. Furthermore, it is possible to switch seamlessly between the PC and mobile versions – your progress will be carried over.
Who is the mobile version for? Those who are already familiar with RuneScape will also find their way around in the mobile version. If you are a veteran of the game and just want to check it out on the small screen or while on the go, this should not cause much trouble.
However, there has already been some criticism in the community, for example on reddit, that the menus on the smartphone might be a bit small (via reddit). Additionally, the login at launch was somewhat bumpy, with connection problems that the developers are working on.
Newcomers who want to try out an MMO can also engage with the mobile version of RuneScape. There is a newly designed tutorial for beginners, as developers Ryan Ward and Matt Casey explained in an interview with Techradar (via TechRadar).
This is called the “Davendale” tutorial and is said to be noticeably shorter than previous tutorial versions in RuneScape. This way, players can get into the game faster than in the PC version.
The character creation has also been adjusted to get players into the game as quickly as possible on mobile: “That has really been streamlined,” say the developers. So, if you’re looking for a quick peek into the game, you should find what you need here.
What does the future look like? In the interview with TechRadar, the developers hinted that the Nintendo Switch could be an interesting new target for RuneScape: “But the goal, or the message, is that I want Runescape everywhere,” Ward said.
Additionally, it is conceivable to release upcoming content in a season model to tell the story of RuneScape in more digestible pieces: “We’ve just started the initial story arc of the Urgoddesses in the game, and this constitutes a kind of seasonal narrative. It will carry on with episodic pieces of content that will be released over a longer period, and we want the game to fall into this rhythm.”
