The nominees for the “The Game Award” award “Content Creator of the Year 2021” are set. The incredibly popular Minecraft YouTuber Dream is also on the list of nominees. However, Twitch streamer Sykkuno and Ludwig don’t really like that. They dare to offer a bit of criticism.
What is this award? On December 9, there are the “The Game Awards,” hosted by Geoff “I host every gaming show” Keighley. It takes place live in Los Angeles. According to Keighley, this is something like the “Oscars of video games.” In fact, new announcements about video games are often made during the show.
There are 30 awards, including the award for “Content Creator of the Year 2021”.
A jury of 103 international media and influencers nominates the potential award candidates. The winners are chosen by the jury (90%) and the votes of the fans (10%).
3 non-English-speaking streamers and Dream nominated
Who is nominated for the award? The nominees for the “Content Creator of the Year” award are:
- Grefg – a Spanish-speaking Twitch streamer for Fortnite
- Ibai – a Spanish-speaking Twitch streamer for everything
- Gaules – a Portuguese-speaking Twitch streamer, primarily for CS:GO
- Fuslie – an English-speaking Twitch streamer who is active in Just Chatting and Valorant
- Dream – an English-speaking YouTuber who dominates Minecraft
Twitch streamers suggest that other nominations would be better than Dream
What is the controversy? Dream is quite a troll with a huge reach over social media. He writes under the tweet of the awards that people should vote for him – and he received 2500 comments, 2900 retweets, and almost 57,000 likes for that.
Recently, he was already accused of maliciously manipulating votes with his influence.
The two Twitch streamers Sykkuno and Ludwig have also commented on the nominations.
Sykkuno says: It is a bit strange that people are nominated who don’t stream that often. He doesn’t explicitly say who he means, but it is quite obvious that he refers to Dream, who has only streamed for 10 hours in the last 90 days.
Sykkuno would rather see a nomination for Ludwig, who has “revolutionized streaming” with his events. He also sees xQc as a frontrunner.
Ludwig, on the other hand, said that in his opinion talents like Sykkuno, xQc, TommyInnit, or Jerma985 deserve a nomination. It has always been a bit of an “insult” not to nominate such talents.
Dream fans criticize Ludwig
This is how it continued: Ludwig received a comment on Twitter from a Dream fan saying that it was unsportsmanlike. He should just congratulate the nominees and leave it at that.
If he cannot do that, he deserves nothing. Therefore Ludwig is also not nominated.
Dream, on the other hand, presented Ludwig and xQc well among his 5 nominees for Content Creator of the Year. He also included Mizkif, the YouTube streamer Valkyrae, and TommyInit/Ramboo – he couldn’t decide.
US streamers who see themselves as “core Twitch” appear irritated
What’s behind this: The discussion reflects clique behavior on Twitch. There are some streamers who see themselves and their respective friends as “the center” of Twitch and wish for recognition; if not for themselves out of modesty, then at least for the people from the same niche. However, none of the nominees on the list belong to the niche of popular Twitch streamers like Ludwig, Sykkuno, or xQc.
The actual controversy from the perspective of US streamers is that three “non-English-speaking” streamers are on the list who do not play a role in the US scene.
Even Fuslie (6,650 average viewers) is actually not as present in the Twitch scene as Pokimane or Amouranth. Americans rarely acknowledge Twitch outside their language area, as can be seen repeatedly. That a German, for example, is among the highest-paid Twitch streamers, didn’t sit well with some.
It is indeed strange that the only male American nominated is precisely Dream, who, being the only nominee, hardly streams on Twitch.
This selection by the award jury seems to generate controversy. However, the jury has some valid points: on one hand, the award goes to the “Content Creator,” not necessarily to a streamer, and it is meant to be global, not just for US Twitch.
In 2021, Dream is nominated for the award, although his year didn’t go smoothly:
