With Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, the latest installment of the popular shooter series is out for a few days, and there are already initial reviews on Metacritic. We at MeinMMO show you how the title is currently being received and how it compares to CoD: Vanguard.
With Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, the popular shooter series has a new installment and the successor to the 2019 released Modern Warfare. Accordingly, CoD MW2 is set in a modern setting and offers numerous multiplayer modes as well as a campaign.

What are the ratings on Metacritic? The average rating of CoD MW2 is solid. The shooter achieves a score of 79 on the PC version and 78 on the PS5.
This value corresponds to the average calculated from different ratings. The highest possible score is 100. Below you can see a brief overview of some ratings:

Reviews on Metacritic praise the gameplay
What do the reviews say? The reviews on Metacritic mostly agree: CoD MW2 is fun but has its problems. The different modes of the multiplayer as well as the gunplay are particularly praised. Already after the beta, players praised the ‘Battlefield mode’ of the latest CoD.
Overall, the gameplay is entertaining and also offers the opportunity to spend many hours in the shooter due to the various and upcoming content. Technical problems and some bugs are mentioned as points of criticism.
Also, MeinMMO editor Maik Schneider shared his first impression of CoD MW2 after the beta and praised similar aspects as the reviews on Metacritic. He particularly liked the movement, the feel of the weapons, and the new gadgets.
Players criticize missing mode and game crashes
Is there criticism from players? Yes, players primarily criticize the technical problems and bugs of the shooter. On Steam, players refer to CoD MW2 as the “Crashing Simulator 2022”.
After the developers subsequently deactivated the so-called attachment tuning to counter the crashes, some players said they didn’t want the feature back at all.
Even the still missing hardcore mode at release or the renewed advantages for PlayStation players are not well received.
CoD MW2 performs better on Metacritic than CoD: Vanguard
How did the predecessor perform? Compared to the last Call of Duty, the 2021 released CoD: Vanguard, CoD MW2 performs well. The shooter set during World War II didn’t do well with critics on Metacritic or with players.
The PC version of Vanguard receives a score of 72 on Metacritic, thus below the 79 of MW2. A strong difference is also shown among users: While MW2 has a solid 5.4 rating, Vanguard has a score of 3.3.
On the PS5, it looks similar. Vanguard scores 73 from critics and 3.5 from users, clearly trailing behind MW2, which has ratings of 78 and 5.3 (via metacritic).
