Since February 25, players can try out the demo of the new shooter Outriders. There was a lot of criticism in the comments on MeinMMO, but our survey shows: The majority thinks the demo is good.
Here’s what it’s about: For a few days, shooter fans can try the demo of Outriders, the new game from Square Enix and People Can Fly. After the initial reactions were rather divided and a somewhat negative atmosphere prevailed in the comments on MeinMMO, we conducted a survey about the demo.
In various articles about Outriders, we asked you how you found the demo, and it seems it didn’t receive as much backlash as initially thought.
Here’s how you voted: A total of 2,173 readers participated in the survey. Each of you had one vote to cast. Here is the distribution of the votes.
“How did you find the Outriders demo so far?”
- Good: 34.7%
- Very good: 28.03%
- Okay: 20.02%
- Not so good: 11.64%
- Really bad: 5.61%
Over 60% of all respondents liked the demo. While 34.7% rated it as “good,” 28.03% even found it “very good.” It was received positively by a large portion of the MeinMMO readers.
For another 20.02%, the demo was okay. Not exceptionally exciting, but not particularly bad either.
The demo was rated negatively by a total of 17.25% of MeinMMO readers. 11.64% found it “not so good,” while it was truly bad for 5.61% of you.
“A mix of Destiny, The Division, and Anthem.”
What you said about the demo: In the comments on our Outriders articles and also on Facebook, you left numerous comments with your opinions.
Basically, many of you agreed that Outriders borrows many elements from other similar shooters. Comparisons to games like Destiny, The Division, Anthem, or even Gears of War were very common.

“I didn’t expect a revolution in the genre.”
What the positive voices say: In the comments, some readers were positively surprised by Outriders. Some of you went into the demo with low or no expectations after being disappointed by other games in the past.
The shooter doesn’t stand out with particularly fancy graphics, innovative gameplay, or bombastic presentations, but it still managed to leave a good impression.
For my part, I feel quite entertained.
I certainly didn’t expect a revolution in the genre. […] I think it’s on track to become a solid title. Kind of like a tasty snack in between.
I’m looking forward to it and will definitely have some fun with my buddy. Hope they get the technical issues sorted out, and then we can get started.

From the positive comments, your hope also spoke that the technical flaws of the demo would be fixed by the release on April 1.
You are not overly hyped about the game, but you recognize and name the problems that Outriders should work on before the release, such as bugs or many loading screens. Still, some of you will take a closer look at the game when it is released in April.
There are rough edges, but all in all, it will be a casual co-op shooting gallery with friends. And since fun should be the priority, the game can already offer something in that regard. It’s not Gears […] and also not The Division, no, it’s Outriders and we’ve only seen a snippet of something that can be much better than currently suspected. And since nothing else is coming in April, it’s a solid game for a few hours.

What I really like is the setting – beautifully dark and dirty, and I also find the way the story develops at the beginning is nicely done. I don’t know what to complain about regarding the German dubbing; all professional speakers and well staged.
So all in all, I think the game is great, it just needs some polishing in certain areas – the cut scenes are supposed to run smoothly at 60FPS in the release version. […]

With a bit of fine-tuning and polishing, Outriders can become a solid game that entertains well. Even if it probably won’t take thousands of hours like Destiny, since it is not a “Games-as-a-Service” game.
“Gameplay is not as good as The Division or Anthem”
What the negative voices say: However, the criticism of the Outriders demo was numerous. Especially the graphics, which do not meet next-gen standards, and the gameplay were criticized in many comments.
The demo unfortunately feels very rough on the PS5. The gunplay is quite weak; the weapons have no impact at all. It feels like shooting with water guns. The videos stutter and frame drops occur. The synchronization often doesn’t match the lip movements. Graphics pop up and jerk unnaturally (capes, etc.). Overall, it feels very unpolished.

I find the gameplay by far not as good as in Division or Anthem. The atmosphere also does not reach those two titles. The journey to the first end boss bored me as well. […] The level design was monotonous regarding the covers, even if the landscape around is nicely done. To be honest, I would rather replay Anthem from the beginning than buy this; I would probably have more fun.

In general, negative comments criticized that the gameplay feels outdated and not cohesive. Some also experienced performance issues and FPS drops that spoiled the fun of playing.
Other criticisms included:
- The jumping was missed.
- Aiming with the controller does not feel good.
- Cut scenes are limited to 30 FPS. Although this cap won’t be in the finished game, it still bothers you.
- Tube-like level design.
- Motion blur was annoying for many PC players. We’ll tell you here how to disable it.
- Problems with matchmaking.
